The 110cr chennai plant is underway
This is a very very measly sum for a car company and is purely an assembly unit. Since C class was eating off the whole pie, and BMW cannot import the 3 series CBUs without homologation since its FOB value is lesser than US$40000, this plant was built.

Right now, all u can expect from this plant in 2007 is assembled 3 series.
5 series assembling is feasible only when there is a good demand,so that they might wanna cut prices for the custmers. Till good numbers are seen 5 series will only be brought the CBU way.

Mini doesn't have a good market in India and isn't worth assembling.

What they are taking about is the plans for 2010. Considering the current SENSEX growth, I think there will be lot of people who can really afford this class of vehiclesIt is a fact that Indian market is matured enough to accept such a kind of fansy product. Even when a natural calamity (Flood) happend the Bombay, Stocks didnt crash. This would be the only place it happend in the whole world that market growing when a natural disaster hits the city. From this simple thing we can make out how investors are confident abount Indian market. So there will be lot of Mini lovers who can really afford to buy it.

Camry is one of the nicest cars. And the 2007 Camry is a piece of art. I love it. That said, 21 lakhs + taxes for a camry comes to $47,000
Boy, oh boy! The prices for the CBUs are ridiculous. If I am buying a car without black money, I would always buy a car that was built in India (CKD kit cars).

Indian assembled BMWs to roll out on March 29

The first 3-Series models of German-based luxury carmaker BMW will be rolled out from its Indian facility at Chennai on March 29, while the 5-Series will be rolled out in June. BMW has set an initial production target of around 1,500 cars from the Chennai facility.
The Chennai facility, set up at an investment of over Euro 20 million, has a capacity to produce 1,500-1,700 cars annually.
Addressing the BMW annual account conference in Mumbai on Wednesday, BMW Group Chairman Norbert Reithofer said, "we are commencing production in India later this month with an assembly unit that will produce around 1,500 units."
BMW also aims to increase the car sells India this year from 257 units sold last year.
BMW Group's General Manager (Regional Marketing) for Asia Pacific, Christoph von Tschirschnitz told PTI, "We have set a target to touch the 1,500-units sales mark in 2007 with the launch of the Chennai plant later this month."

It may sound like anything but the fact remains that they are infact assembled & not manufactured here. More than 90-95% of the components are imported, IIRC only a handful things like the seats etc. are sourced locally. So it can't be called manufactured.

with only 200 cars sold in 2005 I doubt that BMW can beat Mercedes-Benz in India.Mercedes-benz is there for more than a decade.DCIL has got a big network
