India assembled BMW rolling out on March 29

BMW is going to rain goodies by 2009, and that too assembled in India goodies. The 110cr chennai plant is underway and BMW lineup will include the Mini Cooper and Superbikes!
But good things come at a price and in this case, 18 lakhs. Apart from this this plant which has a capacity of 1750 units per month will roll out assembled in India 3 series and 5 series by 2007.

Its better they don't implement this plan cuz they won't be able to sell a Mini for that price..

Granted.

But the people who pay so much do so for a sedan... i dont think they will be too enthusiastic about a small hatchback for the price of a camry/accord.

And, a mini does not have the BMW badge on it, does it? So, what makes BMW think Indians will lap it up?

Anyway. Let the car come first( if at all), then we will see.

the cooper entering our market is a long way off- an article in ET stated 2009, at the EARLIEST. even if the mini decides to debut by 2008, the indian motoring scene is gonna be different by a coutry mile. so, let's not jump the seat here.

but seriously, if and when the mini debuts, i doubt it might find many takers. other than the yankees and the ultra-rich yuppies, the "dudes" might prefer the 3.0 V6 manual accord...

but the juiciest part of the ET article; beemer bikes...yippee.....i have been just dying to see a k1200s on our roads... at least the dream is not that far away now....

put a little thought into it..ultra rich people in india are those who can afford a lot..you just need rich people to have them buy 18L cars...how many accords, camarys, lauras are selling..all those people can afford these cars, i am sure this car will appeal to the girls in those families...it will have a good enough potential, we are not talking about 100s of thousands or even 10s of thousand, but good enough number to satisfy bimmer if they produce it in india..

I think what we are forgetting is that the Mini is a premium priced car even in western countries. The article says the car costs 21,000 euros which roughly equals Rs 12.60 lakhs. In Canada the base Mini with the 115hp engine costs CAD 25,900 plus taxes which equals about Rs 9,84,200. The VW Beetle costs about CAD 25,890 for the A/T. In comparision a 4 door sedan Jetta starts off at CAD 24,975. I'd say pricing even here is at premium levels and BMW don't sell Mini's in thousands even here. The problem with India is that thanks to decades of socialism, Indians are not aware of the rich history behind cult cars like the Beetle and Mini.

but that mus thave been fully imported, if produced in india.. it would be about 20% cheaper on road..so according to your figure..it would be about 19.5 on road meaning about 18 ex showroom as predicted..
