Re: Ford EcoSport Preview @ Auto Expo 2012. EDIT : Indian Spy Pics on Pg. 33

Just wondering on the Social positioning of the Ecosport vs a Sedan (aka Verna, Fiesta, Vento, SX4, etc). Considering the bold looks and gadgetry, there may be a school of thought with a Thumbs Up. There may be another school of thought - 'Oh, again a small car, doesnt look bigger than a swift' The neighbor's son in law bought a VERNA you know..

Thoughts?

3 factors: diesel, SUV, <10 lakhs. These will take care of all positioning issues.

The neighbor's son in law will soon exchange his Verna for an Ecosport or its likes to keep up.

For me, the amount of luggage it can hold would be the key thing. Passenger space should not be that big of a variation from any mid size sedans.

Looks like Ford has recently displayed the Ecosport in a Mall. A positive sign of an earlier launch perhaps?

With PC being the FM, I don't think any Automaker will take the risk of launching a new product in the next fiscal! (Post Budget)

Is this a recent pic? Because I remember they had displayed this vehicle in few malls (including one in Mumbai) a year back after the Delhi AutoExpo.

Quite possible. This pic was uploaded on Ford India FB Page on 28th December. My guess was based on that.

If anybody is still concerned about the little EcoBoost's performance, this should clear all doubts..

Adding this snippet from Ford India Website to further emphasis your point.

There are two version of the 1 liter EcoBoost engine ,one which has 120ps and 200nm of torque and second less powerful version which has 100ps and 170nm of torque.

The picture posted by you says it makes 100ps and 170nm of torque which doesn't match either of the specs as said in the below video.

With peak torque at 1500rpm, I hope Ecoboost wouldn't have much of turbo-lag in city driving conditons which is the usual drawback associated with turbo engines when compared with naturally aspirated ones.

We could probably see the NA version of 1.0L engine with around 80PS make its way into the next generation Figo and probably a lower tuned state of Ecoboost for the Classic. That would give Ford the required volume to make the engine costs in check down the line.

You got that absolutely right, that's why I think the sales of a sedan would not get cannibalized with the sales of a compact SUV that much.I mean it won't be a death end for sedans in this space. It will all depend on the requirements of the buyer;people who want more space, larger boot and the "big car feel" would go for the sedans whereas people who want more ground clearance and don't care too much about back seat comfort would go for the CSUV.Some hatchback buyers might also migrate to the compact SUV,but some might require a nimble city runabout and for that they would choose the hatchback.
Eventually the market will evolve and everyone will have its own space.

Did you read my post ? The main advantage of this 1 litre EcoBoost engine vs a 1.5 litre naturally aspirated engine is the torque that it produces .The one mentioned in that picture claims 120ps with 170nm of torque which is lower then whats mentioned in the video by the Ford manager of petrol engine development ( 200nm of torque for the 120ps version)
