Hey, we are just discussing how split seats affect rigidity. So does having a thinner back rest mean you cant have split seats?

Quote:
They are larger and even Innova costs many more lakhs over. Ertiga is not targeted on those customers (with deep pockets).
So that is what I mentioned - it is cost cutting.

Hmm not so simple. It may also be optimum space utilisation without sacrificing reliability and affecting VFM quotient.
As I said, I dont think split seats affect reliability in any way.

From what I understood from your post, you are saying that since Eritga's 3rd row backrest is thin, they cant give split seats as it will affect the rigidity of the seat... I have seen many cars with thinner back rests and still having split seats. So...

Yup, I was pleasant surprised by the same. Have it in my new dzire also Very few manual models have an integrated dead pedal today. However it disappears under the OEM carpet and two layers of matting that I have put later on.

Split seat backs would be more stable structurally as there would be two structural members for a small span which is less than a single back rest. In fact it increases stability.

though slant adjustable split on 3rd might be a squeeze considering there isn't much space behind the third row to recline into. But yes, split third row and captain seats on second row would make this an appealing buy - they can still do it by releasing a 6 seater version with only ZDI and ZXI variants

Re: Maruti Ertiga 7-Seater : Auto Expo 2012

Had a look at the Ertiga today. Cleared all doubts regarding space issues. I'm 5.8 in height, and has enough leg space in all 3 rows for me. Also, leg space in second row, when 3rd row is folded, was more than enough for me. Again, the second row's back-rest is retractable even after 3rd row is folded.

Also, Ertiga looks much better than Innova, and much much better than Xylo in flesh.

"'Ertiga', a seven-seater MPV launched on April 12. In the first seven days, it has garnered over 15,000 bookings. This is not only a large number for MPVs, but is more than what most new small cars have achieved.

"It's a lifestyle product for urban families, targeted at the premium hatchback, sedan and the MPV buyer," Mr Shashank Srivastava, Chief General Manager (Marketing), told Business Line."

Good news! This is going to send a shiver down the spine of Toyota & M&M! Lovely! This kind of competition is what is required in today's market! The news would have been sweeter if I happened to know there is a load of cancellations for the Innova on this account!

I still think that it's gonna hit more to hatchbacks and sedans than MUVs.

I was watching Car & Bike show, which reviewed Ertiga. SVP too said that Ertiga will affect the sales of premium hatchbacks and entry level sedans, rather than real MUVs. For a change, I agree with him.

They also parked an Innova next to Ertiga for comparison. At least on the outside, Innova is much bigger than Ertiga, both on the outside and inside. I still see Ertiga as an overgrown hatchback with additional seats added just to make it look different from station wagon. It is still front wheel drive, and comes with small (frugal) engines.

Yes I saw that too. In addition, he also tested the vehicles both diesel and Petrol with 7 adults of varying sizes. He mentioned that the vehicle felt stable and pulled well even with 7 adults and there was no perceptible change over when only 2 or 3 people were on board. This is definitely in line with my test as well.

While some may say that Ertiga cannot be directly compared to Innova and Xylo, we need to keep in mind that may would be going for Xylo/Innova simply because there was no choice (in the segment bellow). It is no surprise that many who would be looking to go for Innova/Xylo will opt for the Ertiga. At the same time, there will be some amount of cannibalization with many potential Ritz/Swift buyers upgrading their budget and going for Ertiga.

Have a look at the Ertiga's 3rd row seat backrest, it is not as thin as projected above -

All cars having split seats like Innova, Fortuner, Pajero Sport and even hatchbacks like Swift, Punto, Jazz etc. have similar thickness.

That is what I am saying, it is done simply to cut costs.

In case of Innova and Xylo, the seats doesnt not fold down to the floor but to the either sides. They have to be in 2 pieces. What about the case of the cars where the 3rd row folds in to the floor, like Santa Fe, Captiva etc? ( I know these cars cost 2.5 times more)

The Xylo's seat does not fold to either sides as far as I know.

Both the Santa Fe & the Captiva has a thin/similar seat back and still has split folding seats, which fold down flat to the floor -

Santa Fe:

Maruti Ertiga 7-Seater : Auto Expo 2012-2007_hyundai_santafe_photo-22.jpg

Captiva:

So it is not necessary that if you have thin back rests, you cant have split folding seats. Even the Xylo does not have split seats in the 3rd row... it is simple cost cutting.

Re: Maruti Ertiga 7-Seater : Auto Expo 2012

Even the previous generation Corolla that I own has split rear seats and fold down flat.

I don't know for what reason MS did not do this in Ertiga, but it sure would have been a fantastic value addition to the near-perfect car!

Just wondering, can't this split seat feature be achieved off-market? Someplace like Koyas or any other upholstery specialist?
