I like how Maruti have decided not to use the fake wood interiors that Indian car makers love!! Their interior execution is a lot more classy.

Re: Maruti Ertiga 7-Seater : Auto Expo 2012

The name sounds like some strange disease, but this idea is something that would appeal to a lot in India, which is aptly reflected in the discussion about this car on tbhp. Wasn't this called the R3/RIII or something, which sounds so much better ?

Comparisons to Innova/Xylo are inevitable, but if someone says the Ertiga's shortcomings are lesser width/length/space compared to the former, that IMO is in essence the pros of this car. All (or almost all) of us here love the Innova and if we wanted something as big/wide/bulky as the Innova, why not buy the proven Innova itself ? Here, IMO, the need is for something that is car-like in proportions, but gives an extra row of seats, helps manage those situations where there are 4 adults and couple of kids or 6 adults etc. And from what is seen, the Eritga plugs this need brilliantly.

Now, this would be a perfect car for us given the fix we have found ourselves in occasionally with our Swift-P. We are 4 adults, a 4-yr old kid and an infant in the family and the Swift-P meets our needs well, even for long-distance travel, where the boot is good enough. Now, occasionally we have either of my sisters and their husband/kids joining us and it becomes an issue. There are now 6 adults and 4kids (2 infants) and the Swift is not just enough, while taking 2 cars seems to be a waste. The Ertiga will solve our problem. Even if the boot space is limited, we could use a roof-carrier for the rare outstation trips. And since the car is not big/bulky like the Innova/Xylo, it can be used for the usual run to the town/bank/station for 1-2 pax without issues. Infact given our limited driving, the petrol Ertiga itself would do fine - lower waiting period, better equipment would be a bonus.

Now, only problem is what to do with the Swift1.3P, for which resale would be low since India in general and Kerala in particular is hung up on diesel. Maybe keep it as a second car.

I was told by Bimal motors, Bangalore that the top end diesel-ZDI will not exceed 10.25 lakhs OTR. Product training is due to happen for all dealers by the 4th week of feb and 1st week of March launch looks probable.

The base model comes without even power steering? Impossible, IMO.

So, that would seal the fate of SX4 unless someone is hell bent on buying SX4 and only SX4. For the same price, you get more seating capacity or luggage space

I have a sneaky feeling that the ride quality in the last row will be really really bad. It sits smack on the rear wheels and in these large hatch type vehicles there's a tendancy for the car to heavily pitch and wallow and the ride at back generally gets bumpy. Will certainly be driven in all rows whenever I TD the vehicle on launch

^^^ That would be ~9lakhs at Kerala. Meaning Zxi would be ~8lakhs. Hmm.

A seat which sits right above the rear wheels will be less-bumpier than one sits behind the rear wheels. So, Ertiga's third row seat will be less bumpier than Innova's third seat. (In the same way, sedans, whose second row sits in front of rear wheels, feels more comfortable than hatches whose rear seat sits right above the rear wheels.)

Re: Maruti Ertiga 7-Seater : Auto Expo 2012

If you wanted 7 seats and did still looked at FE, there are (even were) no options for a urban user (Sumo, Baleno types excluced) as a private registered vehicle. You had to buy a big buy with 12 kmpl max! Now I want to move 5 - 7 people and still make sense out of the car, this is where I see the Ertiga (sounds like the name of the character from a computer game) will fit the bill. On the high way it might not be a wow thing to drive, but everytime you drive it around it keeps the purse happy!

Does anyone have any update on the launch?

Last time when I spoke to an SE, he had confirmed March 15th.

Thanks for pics. Good to know that LDI is coming with ABS. But one of the pics shows a Lxi variant but doesn't have a ABS sticker. So, Lxi doesn't have ABS? If so, is it a strategy to bring down the cost for the petrol version?

So a mid-March launch is possible, IMO.
