With those millions of dollars I'm sure, Ironically he must have bought himeself a fossil fuel guzzler or a fleet of them

Re: Reva NXR : Auto Expo 2012

Thanks Rehaan for this one on NXR.

A better design of the exteriors and quite contemporary I must say. A compact car that can seat 4 adults is nice.

This new Reva boasts of a "real rear seat that can seat 2 adults". But since it is compact I wonder if the ride would be good for the rear passengers, since the seating extends almost up to or beyond the rear wheel-well.

Questions:
  1. Need to get to know the specifications in terms of battery life, dimensions, boot space, leg room, weight etc and the features to be provided inside. Hope M&M publishes that shortly.
  2. Are those alloy wheels that I see in the pictures in the original post by Rehaan? And are those R13 tyres?
  3. I can see a keyhole on the hatch-door in the picture too. Will there be space in the boot?
  4. Wish they price it well. While I understand that it is not a regular fuel automobile, 6 lakhs might not be motivating enough in India.
  5. And what about charging points outside of home?
Just an observation: The eagle-eye like headlamps seem to be gaining prominence across – from Hyundai’s latest fleet (read Verna) to SX4 to NXR…

Thanks,
C_

Re: Reva NXR : Auto Expo 2012

I was so badly waiting for this one and infact put my plans of buying the old reva on hold to get this one. I am sorely disappointed at the price bracket they are offering on Reva NXR. 6 - 7 Lakhs is way too beyond my allocated budget and I doubt someone willing to spend so much on their second car.

If at all I have to buy Reva, I will happily settle down with the old model paying 3.5L odd. Thats almost half the amount for an extra 20 kms range???

Regards,
Greg

Re: Reva NXR : Auto Expo 2012

This is a car, looks good, has great features (check out the test drive link), etc.
It has improved over the previous Reva in all departments.

The only thing holding back electric cars for now is the battery technology.
While Internal combustion engines have been actively developed since more than a 100 years now, battery technology only really got a shot in the arm in the recent past, after the hand-held devices revolution which started around 15 years ago.

So, for now, electric cars can only survive if the government gives them subsidy, or else the initial cost and also the running cost (due to battery replacement) will be on-par or even unfavorable compared to conventional cars.

I feel, hybrid technology will come to dominance in the next 10 years or so and pure electric will then become commercially viable after around 20 years from now.
(The hybrids will result in critical volumes for the battery industry which will result in costs going down)

Thought this one had AC and hence needed a grill anyways to let condensor & EM cool themselves.
160kms -> intercity at 9L isnt going to sell anything.

Had few questions.
1. Would hybrid - additional petrol driven engine to help get the distnace coverage increase the overal cost so much?
2. Considering the battery replacement cost & all other, what would be the avg Rs/Km.
I own an Alto and after 50k, its 6 Rs/KM including fuel + maintenance.

Re: Reva NXR : Auto Expo 2012

This is much nicer than the previous Reva. However, if they price it this high, it will not sell.

Even with the Intercity variant's max range of 160 kms, I'm not sure if it can complete an inter-city run (e.g.: Pune - Thane) in actual driving conditions. Also, if you need to recharge on the way and are able to find a charging point, you'll have to wait for a long time till the battery tops up.

The point I'm trying to make is that the electric car will be confined to the cities, until we have a good and reliable charging infrastructure, improved battery ranges (keeping costs down) and faster recharging of batteries.

Re: Reva NXR : Auto Expo 2012

Now that I have driven my i10 Asta Auto for over 5,000 KM on a self-drive trip from Kolkata to North India, I am comfortable with using it as an "inter-city" car.

Hence my original plan of using the i10 as a City car, and buying something else for long distance travel, needs some re-thinking.

As a second car. for driving around in Kolkata, where I get 9 KMpL from my i10, the new Reva is certainly an option. Besides, the Reva is presumably an "automatic", i.e. no gears to change and clutch to press.

My doubts are :

- I don't need a 80 KM range, and hence I don't see why I should pay substantially more to get this range. Can I not have an option to get a 50 KM range car at a lower price ?
- What if I run the A/C all the time, as I do on my i10 ? will the range be significantly reduced ?
- Will I get service and support in Kolkata ? There isn't even a dealer here, let alone a service outfit. Will Mahindra sell and support the Reva in Kolkata ?

Any thoughts on these issues, friends ?

Re: Reva NXR : Auto Expo 2012

Is the new Reva launched? I saw a red colored one near the cantonment station in the morning today. Could not take a picture as I was driving. It had a temporary number plate and was driven by a middle aged person.

Re: Reva NXR : Auto Expo 2012

I have i10 for inter-city and Reva for city roads. Reva is automatic transmission as well.

It gives 70km/full-charge with conservative driving, 55km with a/c. With some aggressive driving in Boost mode, it gives 50km/charge.

No idea whether they sell in Kolkata or not. They might, now that Mahindra has acquired majority stake in Reva. The Reva service centers in Bangalore (atleast the HSR layout one) have now been 'merged' with Mahindra service centers and there are many more places (Mahindra service centers) in Bangalore where you can service Reva in Bangalore. I'd expect the same in other cities over a period of time.

NXR is not orderable yet. I checked. The new factory is just getting ready. The first car might roll out before the end of this year. That's the info I have from one of the service managers.

Re: Reva NXR : Auto Expo 2012

I had the good fortune of visiting the inauguration of the new Mahindra Reva plant for the new gen Reva cars. I should say I came away impressed. Anand Mahindra and Chetan Maini formally inaugurated the plant which is one of its kind and the greenest possible.
Spanking clean, it boasts of non-usage of artificial lighting, entire facility is lighted naturally and in nights its powered by solar power. The ventilation is perfect with no airconditioning and fans (of course Bangalore climate helps). Lot of other green initiatives inside out. They even harness the power generated during dynamometer testing of the cars into power they need for running the plant. No welding as the body and panels are fixed using resin bonding. No painting since the panels are all pre-coloured ABS panels.
The car also looks good, quite a step up from the current model. Though a 2 door, it has space to seat 4 adults. Runs Li-Ion batteries which could boost up the cost unless government steps in with subsidies. The launch will be anytime in the next 2 to 4 months. They were mum on the pricing at this point.
Other unique things in the compound were things like solar parking bay where the car is just parked under the roof and it gets charged. The car also acts like a UPS - when power supply is interrupted in your home, the car provides the backup power. They also have a quick charge equipment where a 15 min charge can provide enough juice for 25km travel.
Photos for your enjoyment

Re: Reva NXR : Auto Expo 2012

This avatar is definitely a mature offering compared to the previous version, and if the pricing is right this time, Mahindra can blitz all small car manufacturers. I have seen this car being tested infinitely on the NICE expressway, and was impressed by its exteriors at least. Now, with the photo of the interiors above, and all the evolutionary bits read about, lets hope the pricing is done right this time. India does not need another Nano-story.

Re: Reva NXR : Auto Expo 2012

Thanks for sharing the pics.
Hope Mahindra could price this the New REVA at current prices and also the govt offer enough subsidies to make this a potential competitor in the small hatch segment.

The car looks good. It will be good to use it for city use.

Re: Reva NXR : Auto Expo 2012

Is it just me, or does the Dashboard design remind me of a Figo's. Anyway, definitely a step-up from the current version's interiors.
