But thats with a 2L block. Isn't?

I believe the 1.5D is around 1235kgs for 4 x 2 and 1290kgs for 4 x 4..

It is indeed lighter compared to its competition and hence 0-100 in 11.8 secs for 110Hp version and 13.9 for 85Hp version.. Thats fast for a Diesel SUV with only limited power under the belt.

You are right, it is for the 2L Petrol.

With the low weight the diesel should be pesky enough despite low power and fuel efficient too

If the Duster is a designate 5 seater, then the GVW is arrived at by considering an average weight of 75 kgs per occupant. So, 5 occupants will be 350 kgs.

So, gross weight (with fuel and other fluids)
= 1775 - 350 / 1850 - 350
= 1425 / 1500 kgs

Considering that this is 2L block, the 1.5L will be definitely lighter. This is not at all surprising considering that it is a monocoque and has only 2 row of seats (a 3rd row seat can add a lot of weight!). Just look at Ertiga. With almost same length and an even smaller 1.3 L diesel engine, the gross weight is 1845 kg!

Tha'ts a bummer. Atleast the top end should have been launched with 110bhp.

Don't understand why would they even think of launching a petrol. Any idea of the petrol engine specifications?

A five seater, frugal off roader is a good differentiator, nevertheless, but a true affordable 4 wheel drive would have really made a fantastic first impression. There is none, and they could have been known for that for ages to come. An urban, self driven, frugal, top of spec 4X4 off roader it could have been. But now the launch with this configuration will only make it an entry level SUV (reason enough), but still a lost opportunity to make a bang on to create the segment (please learn from XUV). The Yeti is still there, but then we are talking affordable (read < 10L) segment, more mass appeal.

Their market search might have told them to dealy a 4X4, but there are no affordable, urban 4X4s in this segment (I would discount the MMs and TML, as we are talking urban, self drive, no discredit to the good ones they are).

Every vehicle that sets an aspiring trend (not being affordable) wins in the long term. Point in case XUV's v/s Nano. Both intended to make the segment affordable, but their marketing was not the same.

A missing bang of a 4X4 is what I am missing! The French need to read the sentiment well!

I was told by reliable sources that the Diesel top end will come surely with 110hp and will be priced around 12L OTR with all frills including Leather upholstery. the bottom variant will be 85hp and will be 9.5 types on the road.. this was the news that i got from a very reliable source. Can you confirm?

@Sathya,

I think that is exactly what the ACI article for Nov 2011 quoted.
They said two engine trims would be released and the higher trims will have 110bhp on tap.

On 30th June it will only be a 2 wheel drive however the 4wheel 110bhp 1.5dci may be launched later depending upon market response.

Wont there be a 2WD 110bhp on offer? I thought that was the main product that they were willing to offer to differentiate.
A powerful, spacious and affordable city/highway cruiser.

Thats really disappointing. Deal breaker for me atleast.. however I will also reconfirm with my sources and report.

The news I have is 3 variants-- lower and mid with the 85hp one and the top 2wd with 110hp. however the 4wd with 110hp wont make it in the near future here.

The duster was launched pretty recently all over the middle east.
Drive Arabia (a UAE based motoring blog) is out with their duster review. Interestingly they've tested the base model.

2012 Renault Duster 4x2 Review | Drive Arabia : Dubai Live >> UAE, Saudi, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait & GCC
Thanks for sharing the link. The price range mentioned there is Dh 48,600-62,000, which comes out to INR 7.09 lacs to INR 9.05 lacs. Please make a note this is for the 2.0L gasoline engine. If we assume the India bound Duster would sport a 1.5L gasoline engine found in the Sunny, then obviously we can hope the petrol Duster to be priced on the lower side, should I say in the range 6.5 lacs to 8.5 lacs for the petrol & if we add a 1 lac premium for the 1.5dCi avatar, shouldn't it retail @ 7.5 lacs to 9.5 lacs, that should be a good deal to begin with, what do you guys say? Even if Renault charges a 1.5 lacs premium for the diesel version, it would still be in the 8-10 lacs range.
