re: Renault (including Duster Unveil) @ Auto Expo 2012 - EDIT: Now launched at 7.19 Lacs

A bit strange. The RXL 110 would typically be a popular choice but no one is going to buy a car upwards of 10 OTR without airbags today. And poor petrolheads have been left completely unloved.

Maybe 2 years ago but the market has moved on and these are essential now

We don't know the prices but 12 ex-factory = 14.5 lakhs OTR! (4x4 will then be 16.5 lakhs for a Duster!) would be way too much for the 4x2, that's more than XUV base, and a bit too close to Yeti. These are much more powerful and modern cars that are completely in a different league when it comes to specs, features, design, build etc. This will not fly, to a niche maybe, but not numbers.

re: Renault (including Duster Unveil) @ Auto Expo 2012 - EDIT: Now launched at 7.19 Lacs

Turning Radius = 5.2m (Good)
Gross V Weight = 1781 (Just a tad heavier than the Sedans & way lighter than the SUVs)
The turbo lag on the 85ps(200Nm@1900) might be better than the 110ps(248Nm@2250rpm)

RxL needs to be really costed low for the loss of Airbags,Alloy Wheels, Rear AC, Rev Parking Sensor, Driver Seat Ergonomics, other goodies

85ps RxL with Option Pack looks Sensible (But Price ?)

Should I or should I not book without even a Test Drive ? a T-BHP Report would suffice.

+1

I am watching this thread closely.
I planning to change my car in a year and requrements are decent power, diesel, good GC, 5 seater with decent luggage space, ABS and dual airbags. RxL option pack looks good, hope they price it under 10L OTR.

Yes, Rxl with options may be a good buy if priced within 10L OTR Bangalore.

One thing to note, all Nissan cars both D & P have a service interval of 6 months or 10K kms, for Dci engine. Need to see if Renault keeps it same or a bigger interval. Shorter interval will increase the cost of ownership in my opinion.

The cars looks great. But i doubt if this would be one of those el-chepo cars. Feature list, size, Renault brand says it is easily going to hit 9 to 10 for petrol base and 15 for top end diesel(atleast in Karnataka). But i believe even at this price point the Duster will have decent run.
Hope this mini SUV market produce some more products by 1-2 years, the time when i want to upgrade

Going by the specification sheet, I am quite surprised at the apparent step motherly treatment of the Petrol variant - especially in terms of options available and safety kit!

Especially because Renault is an Euro company, this doesnt seem to make much sense.

Diesel RxE or not?

Still a bit confused - is there a diesel RxE and is it identical in features to the petrol RxE?

The technical specs section mentions RxE under diesel but nowhere else.

re: Renault (including Duster Unveil) @ Auto Expo 2012 - EDIT: Now launched at 7.19 Lacs

No Airbags and ABS on the petrol variant is a real bummer.

We were considering the Duster along with the EcoSport as our next car. But now, I think we can safely scratch it off the list.

This just goes to show the customer base that Renault is targeting. It's clearly the diesel that gets the importance. The petrol variant without ABS and Airbags may be an attempt at bringing costs down and showing the Duster as a viable and reasonably priced product.

Maybe it's Renault's way of introducing a car with a low-price-tag, thereby highlighting a tantalizing price-tag like "prices start at 7.2 lakhs" or something like that.

It's a pity, because there are hatchbacks today that offer these basic safety-features at a lower price-point. But then again, it wouldn't be fair to compare a hatchback to the Duster.

Seems like Ranault are going to mess it up the whole Duster launch. It has created too much hype and expectation among us. If Ranault can cash on this by pricing the product correctly then its a win win situation... Else its time to say Good Bye from Indian Market.
The price and the specs seems to be very much confusing and bare min kind of thing. Many basic/mid variant feature are available in top variant or with option pack. Not a good sign at all.

Petrol does not get any safety features? i also see lot of stuff missing! This is a new low for petrol heads like me. This effectively kills my thought of going for the Duster.

Signnnnn! Its going to be a long wait for Ford Eco-sport! Going by the trend, Now i fear the much talked about ecoboost engine might not come as well!

So car makers are forcing diesel on us now?

More evidence of the Management teams, production teams, sales teams and marketing teams being completely disconnected from the real needs of the market place?

Sure seems like it doesnt it?

re: Renault (including Duster Unveil) @ Auto Expo 2012 - EDIT: Now launched at 7.19 Lacs

When Renault launched the Fluence with a loaded petrol version and an under-spec'd diesel version, we accused them of not knowing the market. Now, they have a loaded diesel version and an under-spec'd petrol version and they are still out of touch with the market? In the current scenario, I think Renault doesn't expect to sell many petrol Dusters. Who can blame them?

Out of the few who opt for a petrol Duster, how many will take it off the list due to lack of safety features? Renault will be expecting to convert petrol RxL customers who look for safety features to opt for the 85ps diesel RxL+options.

re: Renault (including Duster Unveil) @ Auto Expo 2012 - EDIT: Now launched at 7.19 Lacs

Car makers say that wherever they offer both petrol and diesel variants, upwards of 60% of the sales is for the diesel variant and this was pre petrol price hike. This is also evident in the differential in the waiting times between petrol and diesel variants of the same model.

Also many of those who buy the petrol variant have less than 1000 - 1200 km to be done every month. But most of those who want to buy a Duster will do much more than that, and hence will prefer the diesel variant. (I mean you probably do not buy a rugged looking cross-over / SUV only for a small spin every month).

Hence Duster is probably betting that most of its offtake will be the diesel variant and better to spoil the customer there for choice. And they last thing they likely want is huge waiting times on diesel for their customers.

Cheers,
