re: Renault (including Duster Unveil) @ Auto Expo 2012 - EDIT: Now launched at 7.19 Lacs

BREAKING! Renault Duster could start at Rs 7.5 lakh

So its gonna be 7.5lac for base.

"The firm would offer the Duster with two engine options - the 1.6-litre petrol and 1.5-litre dCi diesel. The former will be part of the same family of engines that also powers the Nissan Sunny petrol in India and produces roughly 102.5 bhp of peak power and just under 15 kgm of peak torque. It is this version that will start at Rs 7.5 lakh and will be offered in two trims. The 1.5-litre dCi will come with two power ratings – 84 bhp and 108 bhp. The K9K motor, as it's also called, will be mated to a 5-speed manual for the 84 bhp version or a 6-speed manual for the 108 bhp version. The Duster will be offered with two-wheel drive (front-wheel drive) only for the moment, while the diesel versions will come with at least three trims each."

What? Are they completely off their rockers? In todays world no AC? How base can base get? However, I think this is a rumour because the article says that the base version in the UK costs about 7.8 lacs and has no AC.
It doesn't automatically follow that they will replicate the same version here at 7.5 lacs. Indeed, if they do, then I think that they will make fools of themselves.

If I read the article correctly, it's the UK base one which comes without AC. Unless they are aiming for a shockingly affordable price to draw in customers into the showrooms and then convert them to higher variants. Unlikely though!

I know its a little premature..but base Petrol was never expected to start at this high a cost level.. they just got greedy.

I am eagerly awaiting the Team-BHP review of the Duster - as I am in the market for such a vehicle and refuse to believe anything written or said about the Duster until the Team BHP review.

They should have taken the base version in UK, added AC to it and put the price as 7.5L. They will be totally stupid to launch a version without AC in India.

The UK can do without an air-conditioner. A heater may be required though.

But in subtropical India, where the Sun burns skin at 40 degrees Celsius plus, it's not the smartest idea. Maybe in a bare-bones entry-level 'car' like the Nano (what it does is keep a roof over your head so you should be thankful for that) but not in a car like the Duster that's going to be priced at 8 lakhs (road tax, insurance yada yada..)

The line clearly says the base version of UK doesn't come with A/C and has manual windows. Nothing about the base version of India.

Request to GTO:

Please do test off-roadability of Duster when TBHP does the test. I would love to see how good the vehicle is even if we are not getting 4Wd anytime soon

Similarly, GTO: please do try and get hold of all 3 variants for your testing, namely the RxE 85 diesel and petrol (special note to check AC cooling without the rear AC) and of course the RxL 110!

These last 8 or 9 years with their worsening weather patterns, one absolutely needs car air-con in Summer in the UK and Europe.

Most of India is as hot as hell nowadays and AC is no longer considered a luxury item but a necessity.

That's what I mean. UK and the rest of Europe could do without one. It's not an absolute necessity. The South of France can get hot during summer. Perhaps just as hot as Bangalore just before summer sets in. But in a place like India, it's an absolute necessity. Especially when one considers the price of the car. An 8 lakh car with no AC is just sacrilegious!

Is Renault hinting at a possible taxi-market? I don't think so, considering that the base variant would be a petrol. Fat chance! So I just can't find a reason why they'd skip on something like that for our market.
