Re: January 2012 : Indian Car Sales

Why clubbing Indica with Vista and Indigo with Manza.

Independent figures would throw light on share of each and every model.

Well that would mean going into too much detail for each variant. Imagine having to go through all the three (the fourth one is just cosmetics) variants of Honda City. We expect (in most scenarios) the cars to behave more or less in the same manner when they go through an upgrade.

Purists might argue that the New Swift is really NEW. True. But, then it would just mean going through tons and tons of information.

Re: January 2012 : Indian Car Sales

Fiat makes wonderful cars that feels lika a tank and makes its presence felt on the road by its unique design and styling. Trust that the announcement by Fiat to move away from TATA-FIAT Jv has this impact. It is really unique and heartening to see that our national diesel-1.3 DDIS does extremely well for marutis and tatas and has a waiting period but comparatively the parent company-FIAT struggles for numbers.

Indica and Vista are two different models which share only the "Indica" moniker.

Vista is pitted against the likes of Swift, Figo etc. So, one would expect to see how this fares against the competition.

Indica has no competition.

The numbers for Ford Fiesta include Fiesta classic as well . Apparently it seems the number are worse than the previous month's count.
Hope Ford understands the value of effective pricing before its too late with Fiesta as well

Re: January 2012 : Indian Car Sales

Correct my hypothesis if I am wrong but here goes:

I have read umpteen comments urging, prodding, pleading, begging Fiat to do something about their car sales. While the comments have bordered on the ecstatic when Punto sold 1600 odd, they have been downright scathing when the sales have been in the dump (yours truly included).

Wonder where Fiat commands and more so, brings out such emotions from the great Indian male mentality! Such a loyal following is something a company or a brand can only dream of. It is frankly, highly unusual that a company with such a loyal following ends up selling 3000 units at best. Wonder what makes the grey cells go weak in the knees talking about Fiat - at the same time - the same grey cells end up shelling out the moolah for a different vehicle entirely in the end...

The Paradigm Angle: With Fiat - Padmini ruling our minds for such a long time, Fiat has been part of the Indian society for such a long time, its almost a part of the family. Such deep-rooted connections are hard to let go.

The Tata Angle: With Tata After Sales being the killjoy factor, many pragmatic Fiat enthusiasts end up buying something else entirely.

Some other points come to mind - but awaiting comments from you all for the distinctive lack of co-relation between brand loyalty and sales!

well most of us wont toy with the idea of buying a stuff from a shop whose owner is rude and arrogant, however awesome that stuff is.
The same goes with FIAT.

Re: January 2012 : Indian Car Sales

read in the papers recently that the reports that a large number of small cars being sold running on diesel are quite unfounded and the panel deciding on special taxes on diesel vehicles went on record actually stating that an increase in diesel price would be better than introduction of a 10 - 20 % diesel duty. It would also be good to carry out an analysis on the wide variety of diesels and it s effects on vehicle sales.

There is a new taxi service in Mumbai called "Tab Cab". All their cabs seem to be the Etios. This cab service has started very recently - probably in Jan. There must been a lot of fleet sales to them in December or Jan.

Every body knows that but the administration do not have the will power to make it happen. No politians will be able to do this. The diesel duty is for political reasons, not based on economics.

Re: January 2012 : Indian Car Sales

People keep talking about Fiat. But i heard that Fiat plant is doing very good currently & people are busy with what they are doing at Fiat Ranjangaon plant. What i heard is they make approximately 500 Linea, 1500 Punto, 9000 Multijet engines only for Maruti, 2000 Manza & 1000 Indica Vista per month. So they have a very busy plant & enough production in hand. I guess they must be making decent profit as well.

They just need one mass seller car i guess. They need to launch small car in the price range of 3.5-4 L. SO that more & more people will buy it & it will bring more people to Fiat show rooms. Also it will make people believe more in Fiat as a brand

No. Won't work. In the small car segment - competition is just too tight and FIAT as a brand won't help bring in the numbers. Moreover, small car customers are the ones who have maximum fear of service and maintenance costs etc.

IMO they should concentrate on the C+ segment, and bring attention catching cars (that sell reasonably). Something that FIAT loyalists + enthusiasts will love, and others will sit up and take notice.

The same has worked for many brands before. Maruti was looking bleak when Swift came in and rocked the charts. Chevrolet was rescued by the aggressive looking Cruze etc. FIAT missed it when they launched the beautiful Linea with underpowered engine options IMO. Linea/ Punto might be good products - but there is not much to differentiate them from competition. Their next product should have that - the capability to grab a lot of attention + make enthusiasts stand in queue outside showrooms.

Might be a big risk - but if FIAT can try and bring in Bravo with a mouth-watering price tag (not CBU/ CBD), with a good features list + powerful engine options - Enthusiasts will stand in queue and others will start taking notice, slowly but steadily. A big hatch wont work in India - but here - the purpose is not numbers - but restructuring the brand.

I just cannot believe that the Tata Vista is considered a B1 hatch Clubbed with the likes of Estilo, Wagon-R, Beat etc. I mean come on. It is more car per car as compared to even the likes of Ford Figo, Swift, & i20. But kudos to Tata for overtaking Hyundai as the number 2. As they say, you have come a long way baby
