Future of Scorpio after launch of XUV500

Hi Folks,

I was just wondering about the future of Mahindra Scorpio after the launch of XUV500. It seems M&M would do away with the scorpio in the next couple of years and consolidate their position with an SUV and MUV in the form of XUV500 and XYLO.

Recently the Xylo has been facelifted and now comes with the same mhawk engine and lots of additional features. Moreover the Xuv500 is also priced just slightly above the Scorpio. All this makes me wonder if Scorpio is counting its days.

I may be wrong, but wanted to find out what our experts have to say? I got a Scorpio last year, but I have started getting nervous about the future of Scorpio

Cheers

Re: Future of Scorpio after launch of XUV500

Well i think Mahindra will continue the Scorpio lineup for the range of offerings in different price points, XUV being the premium offering. There are no other cars/suv's in their portfolio to cover 7-12L range and Scorpio fits beautifully in this range.

XUV remains an aspirational vehicle for many.

As far as Indian market goes all I can say as old and new versions co-exist and do well, I don't see MnM discontinuing Scorpio.
Egs. Santro/i10, 800/Alto, Fiesta Classic/New Fiesta, Indica/Vista, Indigo/Manza.
Just don't loose any more sleep and relax.

Re: Future of Scorpio after launch of XUV500

The Bolero was a flagship product from M&M prior to the Scorpio's launch in 2003.Then within a few years after the Scorpio launch, Bolero reached the India's Top Ten best seller's list and outsold many popular cars. It sticks to the Top Ten bewildering many critics and marketing experts.
The Scorpio has its own niche and everyone may not like to go for the XUV 500.
And if its M&M they are masters at marketing. Look what they have done to the sagging Logan/ Verito sales after Renault's departure- increased it by more than four times.
So no one needs to worry about the fate of the mighty Scorpio. Scorpio is a darling of many buyers sells nearly four times the figures reported by the Tata Safari and also outsells the Innova sometimes. It will sell on and on till M&M wants it to!

Scorp is a true blue SUV & targets a different audience; yeah, there is a bit of overlap though. Secondly the price points - Only those people who can afford the top end variants of Scorpio can go for the XUV, those with a limited budget for SUV will stick on with Scorpio itself.

Please DON'T worry, all new Scorpio is set to be launched in 2014 from what I have read in various sites. Now the replacement is inevitable, but the brand name is gonna stay! After all, it's the vehicle that brought M&M into the limelight!

Re: Future of Scorpio after launch of XUV500

Well, if you consider the sales figures of Scorpio for last year, it is the 2nd best selling SUV in India. Selling almost 4000+ Scorps, you can be rest assured that there is no End Of Life soon for this beast.

Deducing from the above, are you trying to find out if you made a bad investment?

You didn't.

Re: Future of Scorpio after launch of XUV500

Please correct me if I'm wrong. One of Scorpio's biggest strengths is its durability. I think I've read of many BHPians doing 2+ lac KM in their Scorpios without much issues. Since XUV5OO is a monocoque structure, it's not expected to last as long (without much issues) as the body-on-frame Scorpio. And that will be why Scorpio will be more popular among SUV lovers and in rural areas.

Looking at Bolero's sale, one could bet that XUV5OO's launch could actually boost Scorpio's sale!

The Scorpio has always been one of Mahindra's largest cash-cows in the entry-level SUV segment; its here to stay. What might be on the cards is a redesigned Scorpio(just thinking aloud) instead.

This is absolutely true. In terms of durability and toughness, nothing beats the good old scorpio. In the end, its all about maintaining your vehicle for it to serve you better.

Re: Future of Scorpio after launch of XUV500

In last 3 months there have been six in Scorpios in our campus and only 1 XUV, while one might argue that the XUV low number is because of its bookings closed and theoretically it could be higher, but the way i look at it is folks generally wait for some of the problems to be sorted and wait for sometime before picking up and Tata/Mahindra product. Hence Scorpio will continue to be a Cash cow for quiet some time to come looking at the statistics.

Re: Future of Scorpio after launch of XUV500

If Maruti (a hatch-specialist) can sell 7 different(?) hatches (with their thousand variants and huge pricing overlaps) at the same time, I am pretty sure Mahindra&Mahindra (a SUV-specialist) can easily manage 3-4 in its portfolio.

Re: Future of Scorpio after launch of XUV500

The Scorpio will go the way of the Bolero and become a mass market cash cow SUV for M&M.
The dies etc must be well on the way to being fully depreciated by now and given the price of the Scorpio M&M must be happily skimming off the cream from now on into the foreseeable future!
It will also become an increasing presence in the rural markets because all the elderly Scorpios that the urban boys discard, will find their way to the Tier 2, Tier 3 and rural areas. Even in the Metros there are loads of potential customers who will mature into wanting and buying a Scorpio type vehicle from their current hatchbacks and/ or small sedans.
The Scorpio will certainly be around for a long time yet.

Hope they sort out the handling issues though because that swaying from side to side can make anyone sick.
