GTO,
Not quite sure if you would be happy with this request
Would it be possible to publish 2 wheeler reports on the same lines? It will be really helpful and make this forum a perfect all rounder.

Re: March 2012 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Its a crying shame that highly competent manufacturers are revealing a totally shocking side of their companies- the lack of vision and the ability to market. The one taking the cake in this category is of course FIAT. They seem to have small cars selling successfully everywhere except India. Look at their engine choices; either a wimp of an engine like the 1.2 Petrol or a slow revving, inefficient 1.4 P. The 1.3 MJD is better used by every carmaker other than FIAT. Their version of the MJD struggles to move the heavy Punto / Linea. Even the SX4 is better tuned in its MJD avatar. Look at Mitsubishi. This is one of Japan's oldest industrial giants with experience in making fighter planes before and during the WW2. They cant and wont beat a newbie like Hyundai to making a small and competent car. Couldn't they have sold the Lancer and Cedia at better price points. The 2.0 L cedia could have easily be tuned to produce a best in class 160 - 180 Hp and sold just on that USP. But then God knows what their strategy Managers are paid... Maybe in scrap iron.

Heard through a source that Tata is preparing for the launch of a V2 Aria, It will come sooner than it had too because the Aria has failed to sell despite trying everything from price cuts, Agent adverts, crossover...Blah blah blah!

The point to make here is that the Aria will see its second innings pretty soon, hopefully with a realistic price tag and that much awaited AT variant from the expo!

Cheers

Sorry Ku69rd. Would love to, but we don't receive numbers from the two-wheeler manufacturers. Maybe....sometime in the future.

Everybody expecting the demise of Aria..but looks like TM has plans for sharing the platform with LR Defender. Even if the Aria in its current form is not a big success as far as numbers concerned, but it is a big success as a platform for Safari, Defender and many more future vehicles in the pipeline.

As always another fab report from GTO. Thanks Rush.

The Camry will be produced in India starting July and launched in Aug 2012. We should expect a price drop courtesy local manufacture and related savings on Customs duties and taxes. If priced At around 20-22 lakhs this car will sell. The Accord and Superb better watch out. This does not bode well for the now beleaguered Honda SIEL.

Toyota to invest Rs 1,400 crore; assemble Camry in Bengaluru - Rediff.com Business

Cheers!

I would have thought that if it could be priced around 17-18 Lakhs if they start manufacturing it locally. Typically abroad the Camry costs around 50% more than the Corolla. If even the entry level Camry were available at that range, it would kill the competition. In the USA, Camry typically outsells the Corolla most years. Camry has been the highest selling car many years in the USA (not just Toyota, but all manufacturers across all segments).

There's already a 4x2.

About Aria, Tata bit off more than they could chew...Its a Tata and it has to be priced like a Tata. But if you visit the website they they tell you this...

>>"We're currently updating this page with the latest Tata Aria Dealers and Price Lists. We will be back shortly."

Better late than never Tata! Bring it cheaper than XUV and you might *just* survive.

I don't think we can compare the US and India - they are two very different markets especially when it comes to taxes and levies on cars (the main factor in the higher prices in India).

The Camry at 17-18 lakhs is a dream. The refreshed Corolla Altis is about 16-16.5 L for the top end manual and about 17-17.5 lakhs for the automatic (on road prices in MH). The Camry is targetted at the Accord and Superb - both of which are Rs 21 lakhs+ sedans. It will be priced in that range, but it is still a huge drop from the Rs 28-30L for the CBU model that was sold earlier. Pricing was the biggest drawback and has been impacting Camry sales all these years.

Could be have numbers for Commerical Vehicles espically for LCV & HCV?

Also would like to confirm has BMW, Audi, Merc stopped sharing their numbers with SIAM?

In the Feb SIAM 2012 report, under the columns of BMW, Audi & Merc it was mentioned NA.

Thanks

Re: March 2012 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

It is good to see finally one Nissan model (Sunny) is raking up numbers. Combined sales of Sunny & Micra should help Nissan in India given that Teana & X Trail bombed due to wrong pricing.

Also, Pajero Sport got in great numbers in first 15 days given that it was launched mid march. In several geographies Pajero Sport lead Fortuner. While Pajero Sport is very much a capable vehicle to topple Fortuner from the high perch, price could be an issue to bring in high volumes. Nevertheless, good to see it gain numbers over any other SUV available in the market and Fortuner will be the next target.

This is some cumulative sales info I got from various websites. I am not sure what all info does it include, neither can I vouch for the authenticity of these reports on numbers.

Highlight - Honda motorcycle trumped Bajaj to take over 2nd position [confirmed by both the companies].

Honda has overtaken Bajaj to take the 2nd Position. But in terms of profitability Bajaj still rules. Honda is raking in numbers due to the Scooter segment which Bajaj is not present and Similary Bajaj has n number of models in the 100-125 cc category where the Honda lacks.

If these gaps are filled in, then it would be an interesting battle for the sales numbers.
