Heard of the Skoda Jetta? KA RTO goof up

Received the RC card for my new Jetta. I found the manufacturer was stated as Skoda!!!

Rang up the dealer who mentioned that since the car is built by Skoda, the RTO deem that the manufacturer is Skoda based on the papers represented for registration!!!

So you owners of the Skoda Jetta, Skoda Passat, Skoda A4, Skoda A6, Skoda Q5. Thats what happens when your car is assembled by Skoda and registered by the Bangalore RTO

Incredible! Are you sure its not a mistake?

I find it tough to believe there is actually a rule like this.

What about the Polo then?

It's a VW plant in Chakan, where they also make the Rapid & Fabia (besides the Vento & Polo). So do folks in Bangalore get a VW Rapid and VW Fabia?

I suppose that's why most cars get a red tape across the bonnet when they are delivered to customers.

The Skoda is a copy of the VW but the VW is actually a Skoda.

This is surprising. Shouldn't the RTO be going by manufacturer which in this case is VW?

Through what part of the documents does RTO consider Jetta to be "built" by Skoda?

Things will get really confusing now, courtesy Bangalore RTO!

Are the other city/state RTOs doing the same?

Hah! I could swear this was an April Fool's joke that I saw late, but apparently not. I still can't wrap my head around this, but it happens only in India.

Skoda Q5!! I can see Audi owners turning red in the face when their "four bangle" cars are referred to as Skoda's.

By that analogy, shouldn't all Mercedes cars which have engines assembled by Force be renamed to Force S class, et al!!

If the registration papers are represented like that, take up the issue with VW. They may need to get their documents corrected.

Am guessing this only happens with the Bangalore RTO. I know people who have the Jetta in Coorg but theirs is registered as a VW.

Typical of our bureaucrats to be governed by form over substance. Since the car would have been cleared on a Excise gatepass of Skoda plant, its a Skoda!

I guess the RTO couldn't be bothered about marquee names.

So does it follow that all loan documents, insurance papers, etc will say Skoda Jetta? Odd situation if you produce these documents in a state where a Jetta is registered as a VW - say for insurance purposes.

Risibly ridiculous. Please inform the worthies in the Bangalore RTO that they cannot have their own set of rules or interpretations thereof, divorced from the rest of the country.
The manufacturer is VW. The engine plate says so.
