Nissan Sylphy coming to India in 2014

Nissan Sylphy sedan coming to India in 2014!

Quote:
Nissan is planning to launch the Sylphy luxury saloon in India as soon as in 2014. The car will rub shoulders with the sibling Renault Fluence, VW Jetta and Toyota Corolla

Saw it on the Nissan Malaysia site. Looks like a larger, more luxurious version of the Sunny. Pretty bland in my opinion, compared with the Fluence and the Jetta.

Re: Nissan Sylphy coming to India in 2014

IMO this one from Nissan looks like an overgrown Sunny with the same trademark grille and C pillars.

Wonder why they are getting into a segment which has such low volumes when they did actually move out of the entry sedan (read Logan) some time back.

This segment is the one which would give them some bread and butter numbers to boot!

Nissan Sylphy (sounds like "Shilpi") would be-fit more of a Sunny facelift model. They can do the same thing what Hyundai did to the Gen 2 Verna.

Bring in a facelift. Make the car look more "executive" Price it up by 2 lacs and count the cash.

The Sylphy has been around for a few years now (in other markets). Infact the Sunny in India looks like a smaller and slightly disproportionate version of the current Sylphy (the one mentioned in the link is the latest gen unveiled in the Beijing autoshow).

Not really true. It is a fairly big car, and directly pitted against the likes of Corolla and the Civic. If launched in India, it can really trouble the immediate Japanese competition. This segment will see some action in the near future with the arrival of new Civic, Hyundai Elantra/Avante, and now the news about Sylphy.

Re: Nissan Sylphy coming to India in 2014

This is nothing but another name for Nissan Sentra. Sentra in US competes against Corolla, Civic, Cruze, elantra, Focus segment.

I hope Nissan manages to spruce up the looks along with suspension for Indian roads. Sunny has set the benchmark for rear seat space, but Sentra being a saloon from day one and not hatchback derivative, might have space just about equal to Sunny. This could cause overlap in customer's mind as far as space is concerned. Why pay much more for Sentra then if similar amount of space is available in Sunny.

With petrol prices skyrocketing with escape velocity, diesel power would be important. Now, just a 108 bhp K9K wont work IMO. Nissan has to pull up something better in this car to compete against cruze. With Civic diesel likely to come around at same time, competition could be tough for this car and wont be as easy as Sunny had it.

Re: Nissan Sylphy coming to India in 2014

They all look the same to me. A minor nip and tuck here and there. Same as other manufacturers recently, Hyundai, ford etc. all have their own design language:

Versa/Sunny

Sentra/Sylphy

Altima/ teana (?)

Maxima

True. And traditionally, Nissan just cannot stick to one name for a specific model. For e.g.; the Sunny we have in India is now available here with the name Almera. Very confusing!

It’s a much bigger car than the Sunny. Length and wheelbase are almost identical to the Fluence. As far as refinement and interior comfort goes, Sylphy is more aligned to the Teana (than the Sunny).
With the same 1.5 diesel from Fluence, and a lower pricing, this car can really threaten the likes of Toyota Altis D.

The Malaysia site had the second-generation car, which is terrible looking. The third-generation is much sharper looking and can easily hold its own against the competition.

Thats right. Infact, its quite a decent looking car if you consider its age (been around since 2005-06). The latest avatar looks much more sharper, and probably grown a bit in size as well.

Re: Nissan Sylphy coming to India in 2014

Yes it does look like a grown up Sunny. And it may be to late in the day for a 1.8 litre gasoline engine in 2014. By then 99% of cars sold should be diesel I reckon and the gap between diesel and petrol prices could be nudging towards the 3 figure mark.

Re: Nissan Sylphy coming to India in 2014

Nissan is expecting to sell half a million of Sylphy’s a year by 2014 and to achieve this target, they have planned to sell it in 120 countries.

it’s only a matter of time before the Nissan Sylphy makes its way into India.

Setting the car in motion will be a 1.8 litre petrol engine with variable valve timing, generating 130 bhp of power and 174 Nm of torque. The Thailand version also gets a 1.6 litre, 116 bhp petrol.
For India, the 1.5 litre K9K diesel in same state of tune as the Renault Fluence (108 Bhp) could be the weapon of choice. Transmission duty is handled by the efficient X-CVT, India may get a 5-speed manual as well to form the entry model

Re: Nissan Sylphy coming to India in 2014

Just speculating, so Renault will come up with say Renault Soala (Sunny-> Scala: Sylphy -> ??) 6 months down the line with slightly better interiors (must agree Sylphy beats Sunny hands down in the looks department).

I don’t think there will be a need for that. Renault already have the Fluence in that segment (of Sylphy).

Re: Nissan Sylphy coming to India in 2014

Comparing the Sylphy to being something of a 'slightly upscale Sunny' is seriously un-charitable, I would feel.

Looks firmly to be in the Jetta/Cruze/Elantra territory, but with a better engine than the 1.5L K9K ?

This segement could use some competition that could provide reduced service costs and better features (?) . As a Jetta (new model) owner myself ,I am not amused by VW's high service costs. Something that could be better addressed by the Japanese manufacturers?
