Re: May 2012 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Nice report and analysis.

Mahindra is really isolated from other manufactures. Primarily it could be due to our love to diesel vehicles. The other reason for their growth is strong rural demand.

Honda has shown a strong comeback, but we need to wait and see how they are going to sustain. Company has started clearing their backlogs after Thailand floods. That could be the reason behind sudden growth.

Some how I am unable to understand the sudden decline of Tata Indica and Indigos.

Re: May 2012 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

There was news some time back that Maruti 800 production has been stopped. Still it is selling above 1000. Is it just the inventory or it is still in production?

Re: May 2012 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Not a bad month considering all that's happened. Next month will be much worse. All petrol heavy companies Honda and maybe even Hyundai are gonna go in sleep mode in June. Surprised that Tata are doing so bad. I guess they and Fiat have the lowest street cred. Tatas may win back some market share next month maybe not by selling more but by even more dismal sales by the petrolheads.

Cheers

Re: May 2012 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

  • I am quite interested to know how many "green" cars has Maruti sold? Most of the new WagonR's and Alto's in my area are CNG propelled.
  • How many units did the Force 1 Sell?
  • Same with Premier Rio
Surprisingly, the FB pages for the above two have more followers than the Aria page!
  • It is good to see the Pajero Sport numbers. I am failing to understand why is Mitsubishi still producing Lancer and Cedia? 2 capable cars killed by HM-Mitsubishi combo. when Fiat is also learning from it's mistakes, why can't Mitsubishi also do something like that?
  • Why on earth Outlander is available only with Petrol. It's a capable Soft-roader and now available in 7 seats. How difficult it is to plonk a diesel engine in it?

Re: May 2012 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

As usual, great compilation, GTO and Jalsa. Thanks for that.

Good to see Linea outselling the new Ford Fiesta (good product spoiled by wrong pricing). Hopefully Fiat will see more numbers in their third innings !

Diesel is the order of the day and gone are the days of petrol cars.

Heartening to see the Honda "Petrol" cars showing good numbers! Mahindra is going from strength to strength & thier future looks very exciting with the upcoming Mini Xylo/Verito etc.

Re: May 2012 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

I have a feeling that Tata marketing department does not have a feel for the market, and does not have a clue about pricing and models to push.
In any case, it is probably better to look at quarterly trends. Monthly figures can be affected by external temporary factors.

Re: May 2012 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

The exciting Indian Auto sector seems to be losing its sheen offlate. The numbers are under pressure for nearly all manufacturers. The proposed increase in excise duty of diesel cars (even if it is justified) could spell more trouble for future volumes.

On a positive note, this too shall pass and auto sector (alongwith the rest of the economy) should start looking up sooner.

Re: May 2012 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Maruti - It will be only good for MSIL if they get rid of Kizashi,A-star,Estilo,SX4 and even 800.
Their valuable assembly line time better be utilised for other cars. These vehicles simply hold no promise.Maruti engineers better apply their brains on popular cars and make it even more desirable.
TATA - Blunder Masters - One after another blunders - First the Sumo Grande then Aria and now another in making - the Safari Storme.
Interesting to see the effect of petrol price increase on nano sales. Two possibilities - 1. Alto/E-On/Santro customers come to nano (which is a remote possibility) making it survive .
2. Two wheeler upgrade customers now scrap the nano dream putting the petrol nanos to oblivion.
Why TATA product planners never imagined vehicle like Ertiga? they had all the expertise at hand.Even if they had produced one , would it have sold so many numbers?. They are clearly neither in the hearts of rural nor on urban buyer's mind, this being stuck somewhere in the middle taking them to doom.

Re: May 2012 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Mahindra seems to have overtaken Tata to 3rd spot in terms of monthly sales.

Aria numbers as usual is pathetic. Less than 70 units per month for 2 months. Its competitor XUV500 sales close to 3500 units and growing every month.

Not only that Tata's marketing department has lost the market pulse, their design department is completely out of sync with modern trends. They still feel that it's pretty cool to make a vehicle which looks at least a decade older.

Re: May 2012 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Thanks GTO and jalsa for the most updated thread of the month!

Nice to see Jazz sell in decent numbers, it is a very competent car. Nano is also maintaining a steady sales figure. Petrol prices are hitting Alto hard, next month it should fall even more as its target buyer group is also most price sensitive to petrol increase.

Re: May 2012 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

In the month where petrol prices were raised by an absurd ~10%, the only manufacturer to brag with an increase in month over month sales is the manufacturer with no diesel in its line-up - Honda! Indian market is one very complicated market
