ok, that's understandable then. However, HM cannot pull it off. They are not Mahindra.

Well, They can do it if they think. Mahindra was known only for "Jeeps". With the launch of Scorpio, Mahindra became famous and Now Mahindra has a service center in almost all major towns.

Scorpio when launched was an icon in itself. It was known as a Scorpio from Mahindra and not a Mahindra Scorpio. People knew Mahindra because of Scorpio. Similarly, As Pajero is an established vehicle, its 30% already done for HM if it can resurrect this product. "A Pajero from HM" doesnt sound bad

Mahindra had way more brand equity and management capability than HM for decades of history. And it was famous before the Scorpio, the Bolero is their best selling product.
I repeat HM cannot pull it off, I have seen HM-Mitsu in action for years!

That's the advantage you have when creating a new brand. However, in the case of Pajero, this is an iconic brand in itself in various markets all around the world. There is no way Mitsubishi will sell the Pajero brand to a company like HM.

Harbir, You have a fantastic way with words. No frills and very direct.

Having owned First gen Lancer for close to 9 years and 3L KM later, i swear by Mitsubishi, and Paj SFX has always been in my wish list for upgrade. I have extensively driven one, It has all the under pinnings that you have mentioned, but if I had the kinda of money to buy a New SUV Paj SFX would be the one that i had buy in heart beat.

Wishing you a great ownership experience with the beast.

Take Care.

Re: Mitsubishi Pajero SFX production to end in 2012

Stopping Pajero in India will be the biggest mistake by Mitsubishi as of yet.

Pajero, especially BSIII compliant ones, ( the older ones i feel had more power, but the engine has been de-tuned to comply with the BSIII norms ) are still selling; that too with the least amount of aggressive marketing.

I spoke to Pajero sale people in Geo Motors in Kerala and they told me that Pajero will be manufactured for a further 2 more years and Sport will slowly replace it in the market. I think that strategy will be used by Mitsubishi as Pajero still has a fan following and aspiration value among auto enthusiasts, and sport as of now is in no position to replace Pajero SFX.

Even after a period of 25 years in market Pajero as we know is still viewed with respect by auto enthusiasts and that is really telling something about the vehicle.

Re: Mitsubishi Pajero SFX production to end in 2012

Just read on autocar that Pajero sport prices have been slashed by about 1.7x lakhs. Which effectively means that Pajero sfx is the same price as the sport. Funny move by hm, unless Pajero sfx is repositioned at 15lakhs bracket. If only hm would listen!!!!

Price slash is on Pajero Sport, not on SFX.

Pajero SFX ~ 22 lakhs
Pajero Sport ~ 24.5 lakhs before price slash, revised price ~ 22.5 lakhs

only 50k difference between the models.

The Pajero SFX has been quietly discontinued already, I believe.

The website still shows the product though. http://www.mitsubishi-motors.co.in/pajero/

Now the pricing is ridiculous. SFX & Sport at a difference of 50K!

Re: Mitsubishi Pajero SFX production to end in 2012

Mitsubishi's strategy of "cutting the price" never works. Lancer, Cedia, Outlander, have vanished without a trace, when the plan was to increase the sales actually.

They could have very well absorbed the Pajero sport's presumed losses due to high import duties price by pricing it along the competition.

Now this move after initial flock of buyers have disappeared?

I received the same answer when enquired with the dealers in Tamilnadu about 2 months back. Mitsubishi has informed dealers to stop taking bookings for the SFX.

Re: Mitsubishi Pajero SFX production to end in 2012

I think its official now. Pajero SFX along with ageing Lancer Diesel have been discontinued from Mitsubishi India lineup. All webpages (including the pricing info - which was available till last week on the site) related to both SFX and Lancer Diesel are now gone from Mitsubishi India Website.

Cedia Sports is the now the lowest price car in Mitsubishi India Line-up.

Also, as per current international media news, Lancer EVO XI should be axed by middle of 2013 with no replacement in sight. (Rumors are there about a diesel-hybrid car to replace EVO).

RIP Lancer and Pajero SFX.

@Mods: Please update the thread title. Thanks

Re: Mitsubishi Pajero SFX production to end in 2012

Both Lancer & Paj. deserved a burial ~ a decade ago. Anyhow like the things move in our Country, floggin a dead horse is quite common.

The move shall help Mitsu. in formulating plans for the future & better placement of its products.

Pajero SFX - R.I.P
Sad end to a great vehicle. found it one of the best 4X4 ever.
Wonder why did HM not go for an upgrade and facelift like the one done in Brazil...
Well then when will HM finally bury the Amby too?
