All you need to know about the new Honda Brio Sedan

Some claims from the above article quoted here for a quick look.
  • 3,990mm overall length
  • 2,407mm wheelbase
  • 1,680mm width
  • 1,485mm height
  • Boot space of 420 litres! and
  • Heavier than the Hatch variant by just 26 kgs!
  • 90HP 1.2-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine with CVT automatic transmission
  • 20.4 kmpl mileage. (I doubt even if the Hatch gives this kinda mileage.)

Are the above believable?

Regards,
Abhi
Yes , this is what I was expecting, though I expect the wheelbase to be same as Jazz ~ 2500mm & a boot of 420L betters the Indigo CS, which has 380L boot. I also expect the Brio CS to be little more heavier than just 26 kg increase in weight.

I think its confirmed. Following quote is from a Bangkok Paper:

Quote:
At a media briefing yesterday in Thailand, Honda engineers said the Brio saloon will have a 3,990mm overall length and 2,407mm wheelbase, longer than the hatchback by 380mm and 62mm accordingly. The 1,680mm width and 1,485mm height are identical.

The additional length was made to accommodate larger, cushier rear seats and a boot measuring 420 litres. As the saloon is 26kg heavier than the hatchback, changes to the suspension had to be made including new coil springs.

The three-box Brio gets the same 90hp 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and CVT automatic transmission, good for a 20.4kpl average fuel economy.

The new Brio derivative will make its world debut in Thailand next month.

Hey Sarthak,

Thanks for sharing.

Same information coming from two different sources is definitely reassuring (assuming daily Bhaskaran guys didn't copy from Bangkok post). Honda seems to have done a wonderful job in liberating more space while staying within the 4m mark. Amazing!

I think Honda has a winner at hand provided it doesn't goof up the pricing.

I am not sure how the FE figures change for India. if ARAI has different criteria then we might see lower figures for Indian road conditions. But remaining stats look good

Adding to the news, IAB says the India spec diesel might be a 1.2L diesel engine. Some how disappointed if this is true.

Other points:
The color of interior trims will be different to differentiate hatch & sedan
The rear suspension slightly stiffened (by beefed up coil springs) to accommodate extra weight (which may have reduced bounciness).
No premium features like ACC or LCD infotainment to keep costs under check.
Sedan slower to hatch by just 0.1s
1.2L india spec diesel with around 75 ps.

It was indeed the 1.2L that was in talks earlier on. A 1.5 could have been better. But, this does the job and keeps the costs minimal. However i want to see a 1.5L Diesel on City. Honda will be using the same motor to power Brio, Jazz and City and brio sedan right ? But, if its a 1.2L, then they would do like the SX4, adding a VGT or so for City. But, that is a disappointment indeed.

Sedan is behind hatch by 0.1s is an interesting figure.

The earlier talks were about the 1.2L 3 pot engine doing rounds in test Brio. There were also speculations of a 1.5L diesel for the sedan. The latest (unconfirmed) news is its a 1.2L 4 pot engine.

re: Honda Brio Sedan to be launched in 2013. EDIT : To be called "AMAZE"

Honda have a 2 litre 4-pot Diesel, so the 1.5 3 potter is derived from that. Also, I find that the Brio Hatch is under 3700 mm long, so there is a margin of 300+mm to stretch and put in the boot and stay under the 4m.

Are you sure sir, that it is a 3 potter and not a 4 potter? That would be so un-Hondaish.

AFAIK Honda has a Europe specific 2.2 Liter (and not 2 Liter) 4-potter that does duty in European Civic, Accord and CR-V. The all new 1.6 will go into Civic and 2WD version of 2013 CR-V with 2.2 doing duty on AWD version of 2013 CR-V (Accord is getting axed).

I remember reading that Euro Spec diesels are not suitable for High Sulphur diesel being used in India, so Honda is preparing a new engine from grounds up (not deriving it from Euro engines).

All I will say is that the reported sightings of all Brio Diesel mules have indicated it is a 3-potter.

re: Honda Brio Sedan to be launched in 2013. EDIT : To be called "AMAZE"

Am afraid its slightly off topic, but;
How easy/practical is it to 'derive' 3 pots from a 4 pots?

More often when discussion about a new 'baby' product coming in for a big manufacturer happens, we often come across this idea, hence the question.

re: Honda Brio Sedan to be launched in 2013. EDIT : To be called "AMAZE"

@sarathlal; Quite easy. A lot of the smaller engines today are derived from the fours. Of course the reverse is also done - MS 1161 is a 4/3 of the 798! Essentially needs a revised crankshaft and of course a block. You save on pistons, con-rods, liners, etc.

re: Honda Brio Sedan to be launched in 2013. EDIT : To be called "AMAZE"

I'm sure with these specs honda have a winner on hand, provided they price it lower than Swift Dzire for petrol as well as diesel, which isn't difficult since they are already priced lower than swift for petrol hatch by a big margin.

ARAI mileage has to be above 18 for sedan as weight addition is just 26 kg. It will be interesting to know the detailed engine specification for diesel version and also see how honda price it.

re: Honda Brio Sedan to be launched in 2013. EDIT : To be called "AMAZE"

Even before the Brio sedan makes its appearance, the Sail sedan will have its way. In fact, with a large boot, spacious interior, great ride quality and a strong engine, the Sail sedan might pose quite a threat to the Brio sedan.

What works against the Brio is the lack of space (in comparison and presumably in the sedan) when pitted again the Sail. The ride too isn't great and even though its decent, the Sail's ride quality is one of its trump-cards.

The Brio has its work cut out. Will its quirky looks and Honda badge draw some customers to their showrooms? I'd like to hope so.

And if they price it too high, it will be licked by the likes of the Sail and the Dzire which is selling like hotcakes either way.
