Re: July 2012 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

As expected Maruti Suzuki's sales in August 2012 slide down by 40.8 pc!

Hit by a month-long lockout at its Manesar plant due to violence, the country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India today reported 40.8 per cent decline in total sales for August at 54,154 units as against 91,442 units in the same month last year.

Dzire was down by 60.7 per cent to 3,085 units during the month.

The company's other best selling model Swift, along with Estilo and Ritz, together clocked 6,059 units in August this year, down 62.2 per cent from last year.

Toyota Camry received 111 orders and 60 already dispatched, despite the high price and minimum features. Surprising to say the least

Well there are always a few people who love to be different and opt for a newly launched car. Then there are those hardcore Toyota loving executives who might opt for the Camry even with that inflated price tag. Rest of the sales would only be limited to company and Hotel purchases.

Well, how do they account for the display and test drive cars sent to dealers? I suspect a decent chunk would be in that category. Wait for a few months to get a realistic picture of sales (on any new model)

Any idea on that?

I also am an extremely satisfied Altis Automatic owner and would have loved to upgrade to Camry but high price and low features have put me off. Toyota is repeating the mistake of Honda due to which Civic and City sank. Maybe high Yen and depreciating Rupee have contributed to higher costs but thats no excuse to maintain the prices to CBU level.

I can bet a bunch of those 111 camry bookings are high end fleet operators and hotels. Afterall, its a favorite among the visitors as the ultimate taxi..

Am I missing a point here? How does that make a difference? It still proves the point that the camry is the ultimate when comes to passenger comfort. Hotels or individual owner you can't take away from the fact the 111 cars were booked in just 10 days of launch.

Car sales stay sluggish, lockout hits Maruti hard
TIMES NEWS NETWORK

New Delhi: Demand for diesel vehicles kept the momentum going for carmakers in August even as high interest rates and steeper petrol prices continue to hit the demand for petrol variants.
While companies like Tata Motors, Mahindra and Toyota saw double-digit gain in volumes, Maruti Suzuki saw one of its worst showings in the domestic market as its Manesar plant lockout hampered output.
Maruti’s sales in August were down by 35% at 50,129 units against 77,086 units in the same month last year. “Owing to the lockout at the Manesar plant from July 21 to August 20, the supply of Swift, Dzire, SX4 and A-star models was impacted,” the company said in a statement.
Hyundai, the second-largest carmaker, had single-digit growth in the month as it sold 28,257 units on an upside of 6%.
“The market continued to be sluggish but Hyundai domestic sales have grown due to increased preference of diesel vehicles and niche consumer-focused promotions... However, the overall market demand is suppressed due to general inflationary pressure, high fuel prices and high interest rates. Unless any major triggers get activated, market sentiment is not expected to improve very much,” said Rakesh Srivastava, Hyundai’s VP for National Sales.
General Motors and Honda were down in the month. GM’s August numbers fell by 17% while Honda’s volumes were down by 21%.

You are not missing a point but the entire picture by stating that 111 cars are 'booked'. It has been mentioned numerous times on monthly sales analysis thread that the numbers are dealer dispatches from the manufacturer. In case with new car launch, the large chunk has to be demo and display cars.

Will be very interesting to see VW's sales figures. A price hike was also in the offing considering that they must also be hurting from the Rupee depreciation.

Re: July 2012 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Majority of the Camry orders are with the Karnataka Government. Wonder what will be the numbers say 4-5 months down the line.

I see the numbers around 50 but they will definitely not meet the 200 number target with the pricing.
