*Rumour* : Honda Civic to be pulled off from India

Just saw autocar scoop, Civic is to be pulled off from India.

Civic 2012 plans have anyway been shelved for India, with no diesel version in sight (not suitable for India yet, as claimed by Honda), managing sales with old petrol didnt make sense with Honda.

The market will wait for a new civic. Honda, we are waiting.

Makes perfect sense. In the D1 segment not having a diesel is sacrilege.
Isn't the 2012 Civic a disaster already in US?

Makes no sense for Honda to keep selling or trying to sell a product that barely anyone wants. I guess Honda can think of launching a Civic once the new generation is refreshed internationally and has a diesel engine that is "compatible" with conditions and fuel quality in India.

Although it is regularly caned by the press, sales of the Civic haven't been all that bad for Honda USA. So I wouldn't really call it a disaster.
See this for eg. Top selling cars 2012 May.
What the enthusiasts feel or the reviewers feel is not what the market feels, obviously.

Wow!

That is one heck of a news. Honda should have done this long back. Petrol prices are sky rocketting so are the sales of diesels. Hopefully Honda realizes this and gets a diesel for every segment so as to save its name in the Indian market.

Few months later hope we dont get to see another scoop saying the City is off too.

No surprises here. The competition has moved to diesel and Honda is stuck with a petrol motor.

There used to be a time when petrol were not so heavily priced and people preffered the bullet proof reliability of Honda. Now with the advent of toyota diesels and quality being on par with honda, Honda is made to bite the dirt. The have NO option but to launch the Diesel version of all vehicles.

Diesel Brio is a start. Maybe City and Civic would follow.

Re: Autocar scoop - civic to be pulled off from India

Really sad in a sense to hear that the Civic has been canned for now. There's a lot to have liked about the car, but Honda's decision to pull the plug is the right one. With such poor numbers, there's no sense in offering it to customers until they plonk a diesel engine into it.

Honda seem to be stuck on such a slippery. Previously infallible, they can't seem to do a thing right anymore. They need to go down the diesel route ASAP, this we all know. Still, deep down I really do mourn the passing of a truly beautiful car.

Good decision by Honda there! One of the most "mod-able" cars in India will no more be sold, bad news for accessory shops.

As a Civic owner, the news is a bit saddening. I love the way the car brings a smile on your face when you floor it. Love the raspy exhaust note and the planted feel it gives. But the present market demands a diesel and Honda has to catch up with the market requirements. Sad news but was bound to happen.

Actually, it's a little surprising. And a little sad.

I always thought the Jazz would be the first Honda to get canned, especially after the entry of the Brio.

I still remember the buzz the Civic created when it entered the market. It was one of those cars that took the market by storm.

I wouldn't be too worried about availability of parts, at least for the next 5 years.

Look at this way: Years old Corolla with age old 4 speed AT is within couple of 2k units of 2012 Civic. Usually, for Civic and Corolla, when the new model is launched, the sales difference is much larger between those two. Moreover, when the last generation Civic was launched, the sales different between Corolla and Civc was too big. It is not the case with 2012 CIVIC. Even Honda US itself has stated that they are working on NEWLY LAUNCHED 2012 CIVIC.

I think it is a wise move by Honda to stop production of Civic in India. As the new model is not doing good, it does not make sense to launch it in India.

Remember, Hyundai did the same thing in past with Elentra. They altogether skipped launch of one generation of Elentra before coming out with much stronger latest Elentra last month.

Good news for the used car buyers though. The resale value will take a serious plunge and almost meet the City or even go lower than that. This is not like how Maruti pulled the plug on the Baleno, much more serious than that.

Honda is not pulling plug completely. They will launch NEW UPDATED Civic later on when they have diesel ready. It is much better than discontinuing a model like Maruti did with Baleno. I don't see Civic's re-sale going down much from its current level. Actually, I won't be surprised if the resale goes up marginally since it's hot favorite in petrol heads.

Re: Autocar scoop - civic to be pulled off from India

That's a very good decision, both for the company and the buyer. For prospective customers of the segment, that's one hurdle down.

But I just hope that they don't try to spike up the City with added gizmos and perhaps a Diesel in the future into this price bracket vacated by Civic and boost the new Civic (whenever launched) to Jetta's range.

Not sure what to make of this. Are the numbers of their flagship Accord or City better than the Civic's to have warranted this?
