Honda City S-AT is back!

Honda India has re-launched the Automatic Transmission in City "S" variant at Rs. 9,09,000 Ex-Showroom Delhi! This is a welcome move from Honda and people can now get the convenience of Automatic Transmission in the mid variant itself without the need for spending the extra money on the top end “V” variant. The technical specification of S-AT is same as V-AT and all the features that come with S-MT is available in S-AT with the addition of 5 speed Automatic Transmission, which is arguably one of the best in this segment.

Prices as received from Honda. Brochure can be downloaded here :

That indeed is great news. Honda has now understood what the Indian market needs and hence the automatic variant is quite competitively priced IMO.
The city is surely the best in its segment in its refinement and drive quality. Adding that automatic gearbox to the middle variant is a great move by honda and they will get quite positive reaction from the customers.

Re: Honda City S-AT is back!

Good news from Honda.

Most of the auto boxes were available only on the top variants across brands. That was a major factor in the slow adoption of automatic gearbox cars as top variants are typically more chauffeur driven on top of being most expensive.

Introducing auto gearbox option in the middle variant is indeed a smart move by Honda. Now if only they soon bring a diesel engine option with an auto box.

Hope they introduce an auto gearbox option in the Jazz too.

I think Honda (though they later withdrew) and recently their Korean neighbours introduced AT in more than one variant. Earlier the AT was based on the second top variant, take it or leave it.

Good move by Honda.

Even Maruti has realized this and given AT in Dzire Vxi instead of Zxi.

Toyota had two AT options in corolla earlier, H3 and H4. Also in the altis they introduced CVT in Variant lower than V (a few months back), I think GX.

Re: Honda City S-AT is back!

If only they had brought it back in April... I would have saved fifty thousand. this is a good move all right. Now is the time to bring the auto box on the Brio as well. That would spice up the small hatch petrol segment.

I so feel for you. I got mine in May. Only if I had waited for a few more months!!!

Also, why don't they indicate AT in some way on the car? I would love to sport a AT label next to the "V". Nobody does this. I wonder why?

Hyundai does write "auto" at the boot of i10. Even scorpio has Automatic written at the boot door.

Re: Honda City S-AT is back!

Ah! I stand corrected. I feel even worse now. They should have something for AT in Honda cards.

Coming back to original topic - What's the business reason for this move? The chauffeur reason indicated above might be correct. But, I think it's probably to boost sales for an otherwise hopeless petrol car market. Selling auto gear is now becoming increasingly hard and this is one obvious reaction from automakers

Re: Honda City S-AT is back!

how much does an Auto help in bumper to bumper traffic? I assume you would either need to change gear to N or keep the brakes pressed when you have stopped?

That's right.

But at-lest you don't have to work on the clutch. Your left leg can rest.
However I think it is better to put it in neutral rather than standing on the brake for the whole time.

No need to change gear to N in bumper to bumper; brake is required to be applied to stop, to go slow so far as I know. And to move the car at low speeds, simply removal foot from the brake will suffice when moving off. The brake is appiled to maintain a constant speed and the throttle/gas pedal to increase speed. Shifting into "N" (neutral) is required when stationary for long periods so the engine doesn't work against the torque converter and waste power.

I think, distingushed BHPian, 'sgiitk' accustomed for a long with AT may throw a light in details with his practical experiences in this regard, if he kindly see the matter.

A wikihow url is also helpful though.
