As car manufacturers embrace vehicle recall as a reality of the industry, the government is also doing its bit to ease the process.

The road and transport ministry has made a proposal that will allow car manufacturers to reach their customers more conveniently during recall, Business Standard reported. According to the proposal, car manufacturers will share vehicle identification details with the Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) at production. RTOs will record the ownership details during sale and later during second-hand sales. The data will be routinely shared among the RTOs.

This process is expected to eliminate data entry errors during vehicle registration. Also, a single record for each vehicle in the database will avoid double registrations. A manufacturer will be able to contact even the 2nd or 3rd owner of a car if a recall has been announced.

This announcement comes barely a week after Ford made India’s biggest ever recall identifying 1.28 lakh cars for inspection. Last month, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) announced their Voluntary Code on Vehicle Recall which encouraged car manufacturers to voluntarily inspect and rectify safety defects originating at the plant.

So, manufacturers will now refer to RTO records rather than those with dealers?

This should work well considering the amount of 2nd hand sales - both individual and via used car dealers.

A step in the right direction.
