IMO as the technology increaces the relaiblity will go up and the life span of the cars also would increace. This is anologus with the fact that the betterment of the healthcare in Inda has increaced the life span of Indians from 50 years at the time of Independance to over 70 now.

As pointed out by @omtoatom, the question was average across all cars irrespective of make or fuel type, having 4 wheels; what the average age at that point in a dipstick survey would be. And this sort of dipstick survey is what our members @omtoatom and @vineethvazhayil did (below)

@trave11er, exactly right that our road quality etc matter in the life. And hence my query - after accounting for all these factors, what is the average age of cars running on Indian roads.

Anyway turns out, I arrived at somewhere between 5-6 years in my sample. Which seems logical enough given our roads, overall infrastructure, vehicular durability etc.. No idea if my universe is a true representation; but this is what I have. :)

And spurred on by your survey, I did my own dipstick survey. I chose a road where more likely self driven cars would be seen, away from offices, etc. to avoid skewing towards Indica taxis, and other yellow plate vehicles. Secondly, I chose an evening time when it is less official vehicles. My survey surprised me with maximum frequency being Swift, Alto, Santro Xing, Ritz peppered with sedans like Accent, Optra, and even the odd Esteem. Very few M800's and even occasional Omni. Mind you, here I was rolling up variations in models for that sense of a model and ultimately the average age. One trick, which I adopted, is to discount my own cars life from the sample so as not to skew the data quality.
Sharpen the number with actual sales data
This article mentions Maruti Suzuki as having 46% market share, which surely skews the average in its favour. This is followed by Tata Motors with 16.45%, followed by Hyundai with 14.15% and Mahindra with 6.5%.

I put these numbers in a spreadsheet...and tried to assign weightage from market share to the average age of a car that I saw in my random sample viz. Alto launched in 2000, new Zen launched in 2003, Swift launched in 2005, and a few more...before I got stretched! The data now looks more and more like what others shared and
I guess average age of running cars on Indian roads is 7 to 8 years.
There is also the fact that my sample is Bangalore and HSR layout...more upmarketish! From the few responses, here and if we have more, from different cities and towns and regions within, we can guesstimate a decent average observation!
Having revised my number, I wonder if manufacturers actually commission more scientific surveys!
