Nano Patrol - Kochi Police's Latest Addition

There is nothing much to it, yet it brought some cheers to out little gang.We were having our dinner at the 'Thattukada', right oppsite Chic King, near Maharaja's College Ground, Kochi. We spotted this little one parked right besides the Police Hut or whatever its called (The one in which a traffic police sits and manually controls the so called automated traffic lights). Wish i could use that sweet parking space right at the traffic junction.

Well, this cool guy was donated by rotary club to the police department. I heard that the initial plan was to buy raincoats worth Rs.1 Lakh, but on advice of police officers, they ended up with Nano Patrol.

Internet told me that this guy was launched a month back, somewhere in August, but was not added to the police fleet, and hence was not eligible for fuel. so, nicely rested, and now a month later, is out on roads.

Intention of this patrol was, quick navigation, easy patrolling in busy streets, beat patrol as part of janamythri and yes, all that is good.
But, all i could see was police with breath analyzers busy checking in the midst of all that traffic, creating more trouble.

Anyways, that was my first sighting of this guy, and thought someone might like it.
Cheers !

re: Nano Patrol - Kochi Police's Latest Addition

Nano is a great vehicle to cruise along the busy and narrow road of Kochi. I think the the police departments of the Congested metros should take this cue and induct few nanos so that they can use it withing the City limits for patroling as it is cheap to procure and maintain compared to other cars like the Hyundai Accent that Chennai Police owns.

Once the Diesel version of Nano is launched it would be cost effective to run these cute machines.
But out of city Gypsy or Bolero will rule for sure. Nano can't for sure catch theives running away in Scorpios or CBRs .

It actually does make sense to have a Nano as a police car in the Metros. It looks cute and hopefully it will give it an image and sales boost.
It did not work for the Accent in Chennai, but if marketed well this might work to Tata's advantage.

This is a real nice news. Man the car in the patrol form does look cute too. All metros should ideally brace this car for patrol as its easier to drive in our streets which are clogged with traffic and road side vendors.

A good move. A Nano patrol would be ideal in the cities. Wonder who did those nice decals. Rotary club or the Tatas?

BTW, elsewhere, Ranchi cops are not impressed by the performance of the Nanos.

A police Nano driver said, “Nano is supposed to be used for pursuit, but it is impossible. On high speeds, the car starts to vibrate which makes it difficult for us to control it. Also its body is made up of fibre, so we have to be cautious that we don’t get into an accident. If something like this happens, the given safety measures might not be enough to prevent fatality.”

“Also, we need powerful vehicles to pursue and arrest criminals. Nano is a lot low on the power and its low-powered engine is scarcely capable of that. The meager boot space too is quite uncomfortable for well built police officials to fit in,” added the driver.

Few days back I saw a Nano patrol in white near Malad in Mumbai. Seems like nano is getting popular among cops! I would say its a great move by the Indian Traffic Department each state should get it the nano is really good for city usage. Driving in city is super easy and the dimensions are a plus for congested roads, the acceleration of Nano in city too is phenomenal! Hope it gets more popular soon.

Totally agree. They could definitely replace the Bullet bikes currently used by Police. They are ideal for narrow city roads. But, “Nano is supposed to be used for pursuit," seriously? what is wrong with these decision makers.
I see lot of Nanos selling lottery tickets at various places in Kerala. Nice to see some Police Nanos too!

It was a different story in Chennai. Hyundai gifted 100 Accent CRDI's to Chennai Police when they are about to phase out the Accent CRDI. In fact, the image of Accent got a heavy beating which is labelled as the Police car in Chennai.

I think it should have been done up with some more graphics to make it stand out. Or was the intention to blend in?

"Hey there is a funny looking eeny weeny nano behind us"
"Cut him off, cut him off, would be so funny"

Now, the end result wouldnt be so funny eh?

We have similar cars here in Goa too.
I think Tata Motors might have made this move to increase sales.

Generally Police vehicles have been associated with Jeeps and SUVs. This is the first time we are seeing a hatchback a police vehicle.

Lets see how it goes. In congested traffic Nanos are easier to drive than Scorpios and Jeeps.

it surely does helps a lot for city police to move around the city with Nano, but then would they be able to use this car same roughly and harshly as they tend to use scorpios n jeeps till now and would this car be able to widthstand that abuse is the questions remains to see.

Maybe the lady cops should be given this, they might take care of it. Yes the cop cars are abused, hardly cared for, but I guess it should be ok in Kochi since it is not a big city as any other metro.
