re: Flop cars of India

Please define 'lemon' in the automotive context.

From what I know (and as condor has mentioned above ), 'lemon' indicates a vehicle with technical problems.

We seem to be debating car models which have been failures in the market (and not due to technical reasons).

I know that the Daewoo Cielo was the most technologically advanced car in the Indian market when it was launched (MPFI for the first time). It definitely did not have any technical issues which could cause it to be labelled a lemon.

And I am also not sure, if the term 'lemon' can be used to cover an entire brand or model of cars : it probably is used only to refer to individual cars, which have the problems.

re: Flop cars of India

How about the Puegot 309? Even in those days, I think the number of cars they sold was countable on fingures.

Though, I believe, the car was technology well built and ahead of its time. Still, I am not sure the car can fall as a failure category.

I wouldn't call the Peugeot 309 as ahead of its time. It was actually quite far behind its time. It was a model that was outdated in Europe and had proved itself in Africa. They got it and tried selling it here. But the discerning Indian customer just said no to it!

re: Flop cars of India

A lemon refers to something that does not work

Every car manufactured must be having a lemon index(no. of defectives per say 1000 cars).

Maybe we can continue the discussion to list down which cars have a high lemon index

Technologically advanced is not the same as reliable, ask any merc owner from this century. Cielo had the looks and the goods, but just didn't deliver on the reliability part.

re: Flop cars of India

If M1000 was a lemon then there are many more that would be "bitter" lemon. Remember likes of NE118, Peugeot 307....

Re: Flop cars of India

The Maruti 1000 was introduced at the time when the market was desperately wanting something new, something fresh, something that looked modern and also came with a lot of goodies! And I, for one think that this car was the one that set off the craze of the now common looking sedans.

If one compares the 998 cc engine to today's 1.5 and 1.6 litred mpfi's and all the bells and whistles, of course it's going to stand out as a fail. But for those times, the early nineties in India, I don't think it must've been the case!

Sure there were the Contessas and Ambassadors with the 1.8 petrols and 2.0 diesels, but they were sluggish and remained like that till Y2K. The 1000's engine was underpowered, yes, but that car was quick!

Besides, there was no competition! People wouldn't look for performance or mileage or power windows or ABS back then. All they wanted was a fresh, comfortable car and Maruti made sure that they got one.
