re: Mahindra buying Aston Martin? EDIT : Investindustrial is the new owner!

Great news! But I hope M&M leaves a free hand to Aston in R&D even after the buy.

Else, you should have a proper auto enthusiast like Ratan Tata on board. I read the F type was fast tracked by Tata himself.

Tata showed involvement in the design stages of the F-Type. Quote by Ian Callum (Jaguar Design Director) - "The tail light is the only bit inspired by the E-Type on the request of Ratan Tata, who wanted a bit of the E-Type somewhere in this car." (Article in Topgear october issue)

It looks like Tata Motors is also in race to acquire Aston Martin. Here is the detailed report published on Burmingham Post.

There will be a lot of synergy with Tata. The Aston Production site is next door to Jag's r and d centre. Some of the JLR managers have done stints in Aston Martin and a lot of technology and components could be shared. Add to that Aston Martin have access to JLR's extensive R&D

Aston Martin for sale . So who are the potential bidders?
Quote:
Investment Dar Co. of Kuwait, Aston's controlling shareholder, has approached Indian automaker Mahindra & Mahindra, the news service says. Acquiring Aston would give Mahindra a luxury trophy to hold up against Indian rival Tata's Jaguar and Land Rover.
Quote:
Toyota hired an auditor to conduct a one-week study on buying a stake in Aston. But it says the Toyota analysis, which was carried out less than two months ago, was preliminary and hasn't advanced to a full-blown evaluation

Bulk of Aston Martin's lineup consists of two-door coupes such as the DB9, Vanquish and Vantage. It also offers the tiny Cygnet, which is based on Toyota's iQ

re: Mahindra buying Aston Martin? EDIT : Investindustrial is the new owner!

Mahindra is wrong candidate in the Aston Martin race. It has been a M/SUV player all along and acquiring a sports car will make its portfolio imbalanced by taking it in the wrong direction. The Ssanyong buyout has helped it by providing newer/better tech to its existing SUV range, but willnot be the same with AM takeover. After 2010 takeover, it has launched the 1st Ssanyong vehicle in Indian market. Also the tech suppport from it may have gone into the making of XUV. But the tech support from AM will not help it in anyway. Also being super-exclusive cars, they will not be fast selling in the Indian market unlike the M&M vehicles. Mahindra will also need to give full free hand to R&D team with ample financial support. This might weaken the parent group.

Tata gained by the JLR buy because the LR gave much needed tech help and Jag moved on its own mettle with financial help from the parent group. An enthusiast like Ratan Tata only helped the matters to a great extent. Although it was in huge debt initially, but the superb show by the JLR group has helped strenghen the parent group economically and also given it the image boost. The AM buy by Tata may be helpful to them as they can synchronize the R&D of the the Jag and AM with Jag targeting the luxury and super-luxury and Aston at the sports segment. But this will also mean a lot of investment which might de-stabilize its current R&D works economically.

Interesting. It's a 2 horse race now - M&M and an Italian PE firm (that has a technical tie-up with AMG Mercedes). Both have submitted their bids, but apparently M&M has bid higher

Indian and Italian firms battle for stake in Aston Martin

Plus for a period in the early 2000's Ford owned all three brands. Ulrich Bez was the CEO of Aston then I remember!

re: Mahindra buying Aston Martin? EDIT : Investindustrial is the new owner!

Aston Martin nears stake sale to Italian private equity firm.

An Italian buyout firm is poised to take a 50% stake in Aston Martin in a deal that values the luxury UK carmaker at £750m, according to a person familiar with the situation.

Investindustrial which was set up in 1999 and has more than €3bn of assets under management, is close to signing a final agreement to buy the stake from Aston Martin’s Kuwaiti owner, The Investment Dar, in the next few 24 hours, the person said. The Investment Dar, a Kuwaiti finance house, will retain the remaining stake. The person said the deal was “almost tied up”.
The buyout firm had reached an accord to buy the stake last night. However, Indian carmaker Mahindra & Mahindra, the only competing bidder for the company, responded with a higher counter offer, the person said.

Investindustrial is understood to have an agreement with Mercedes to act as a technical partner on the deal. If the acquisition goes through, the German carmaker will provide engines, gearboxes and other technical expertise.

It is also expected that Mercedes will take a small equity stake in the business at a future date.

Even in India, I guess M&M and Tata have a synergy. A family friend dealing in M&M spares said that radiators for some of the Tata vehicles are supplied by M&M and some other parts too. Could be true since both cater to a similar segment of vehicles.

re: Mahindra buying Aston Martin? EDIT : Investindustrial is the new owner!

A 50 per cent stake in Aston Martin could be sold before the end of the month, according to reports.

Mahindra & Mahindra are said to have made the higher bid, but Invest Industrial are reported to be offering a technical partnership with Mercedes as part of the deal.

Financial Times insiders report that the proposed technical partnership is seen as a "trump card" by Investment Dar.

re: Mahindra buying Aston Martin? EDIT : Investindustrial is the new owner!

Well is it a matter of pride yes.
But does it make good business sense, I dont think so.

AM makes cars which are good to look at but the market is diminishing for such fuel thirsty cars, unless they are German. It will not mean much of inroads into markets like US. It might make sense only in UK (I am commenting on my knowledge, correct me if I am wrong).

Moreover, think of what lessons can Mahindra put from a Car into its India- centered SUV s. Dont think it will make much business sense for them to buy it.

Moreover think of it, Mahindra has not been able to make much sense of its SVU maker acquisition Ssangyong itself, for almost 3 yrs. Dont think it will make much sense.

If this deal ever goes through the next Bond movie will picture 007 driving an all new Mahindra Martin DB10! And the bad guys will be chasing him in their XUV500s and Xylos. Some Eye-candy material that would make!

RIP Aston.
