Looks to be a very good car. In Europe, this competes with the likes of Nissan Qashqai. Which means, if launched in India the pricing should be around the top-end Duster range. Competent products like these can actually give Suzuki a head-start in the 10 lakhs+ segment.

They have a perfect solution for the C segment compact SUV territory. But they still would like to crowd the sub 4 meter space.

One big problem for them is the unwillingness of the Indian consumer to pay anything more than Rs 10 lac for a Maruti vehicle.
Somehow they have been relegated to being manufacturers of pure mass products and inexpensive products, in the confines of the mental filing cabinets of generations of Indians.

+1 to that

May be they should look at offering premium service to people buying C segment vehicles. Imagine same mechanic multitasking with a C segment SUV/sedan costing 12-15L along with another Alto.

These buyers would love to get pampered a bit. Dedicated service set up for high end cars would improve the experience of these buyers

This applies even to M&M.
Imagine ones expensive XUV W8 AWD or Ssangyong Rexton sitting in a bay next to one of those horrid rusty Bolero Campers. And this is exactly what happens in India Garage in Coorg and Mysore.

Re: Maruti’s plans - Upgraded Swift, SX4 Crossover and an 800cc Diesel car?

Five plans for Maruti from from Ayakuwa's (MD - MS) interview.

The company is super confident of its small car portfolio, even while admitting that its core is not big cars. This could be one of the reasons why Suzuki, Maruti's parent is planning to mend ties with Volkswagen.

1.New small car
Maruti Suzuki will launch a new small car later this year to complement Maruti 800 and Alto series. Upgrades to existing models to continue.

2.SUVs and small cars will be focus
Growth to come from SUVs. To bring in some models.

3.Urban market saturated, Rural is th
Newer areas by including our dealers in the process. Events to help a lot in encouraging demand. To allow people to touch, feel and drive our products. Such things encourage demande new Mantra.

4. Despite the current slowdown, MS expects theIndian market to touch 4-million mark by 2016 and Maruti sales should go beyond 1.6 million in the same period.

5.Suzuki scion to be on Maruti board
Toshihiro Suzuki to be future he will be a director.

Next generation Alto, A-Star or replacement for A-Star + Ritz?

Actually, Maruti has pretty much broken the 10L barrier. Ertiga ZDi costs upwards of 10L in Bangalore and I see so many of them on the road here. The real issue is, people expect certain quality above 11-12L which Maruti fails to deliver on. The feel good factor delivered by cars like Vento is missing in Maruti cars.

"The first SUV will be a a crossover variant of the SX4 (Code: YAD) with a higher ground clearance and boasting of several premium features, according to sources. This will be launched by end-2014, followed by a compact SUV (code: YBA) in 2015 based on the XA Alpha concept shown at the Auto Expo last year and will target the Ford EcoSport. A third larger SUV model is also expected in the premium end, which will probably replace the Grand Vitara but with a lower entry price."

This is a confusing lineup. As per the article the first launch in mid 2014 is based on Sx4 plaftform which means it may not be priced high (in 11-15 lac range maybe). The second car to be launched in 2015 will be the XA alpha based one to take over EecoSport, so say with an onroad price of around 10 lac for mid range varient.

The third model is a replacement for Grand vitara but the article mentions with a lower entry price, now the current Vitara has high taxation due to it being knocked down imported units. So a lower price means they have to get it produced in India and rates can be again in say 15 lakh or lesser range.

So that means they have lineup of three cars with overlapping price list, almost similar to Marutis hatch lineup. That as such is not a badove but in my view they should have thought of bringing out the cheapest of the lot first and fast, not in 2015 and bring other models after that. I dont agree to the people dont buy expensive Maruti debate. Agreed that Maruti's does not have the brand value of say Honda or VW however in my view the products failed since it was not considered value for money. Kizashi, Vitara was overpriced during initial launch. Sx4 was not having a diesel engine for about first 3 years of its life. And by time it was launched with a Diesel the model design was considered outdated.
Ertiga has the same engine as Sx4 diesel, based on smaller swift platform but still sells more than Ritz which costs around half.

India is a major market for Suzuki, with almost half of their global revenue generated from here. Still it is suprising that they are taking their own sweet time to come up with products which market wants. Equally suprising is the casual attitude towards sedans. Few years down the lane current Maruti hatch owners will be looking for a new car and Maruti may not have anything in its stable to retain them.

With the success of Ecosport and Duster, I think we will see many crossover launches in the next couple of years. It is a segment which no car manufacturer can ignore in Indian market.

Sorry if this was shared earlier. I love this vehicle, hope it will launch soon with a 1.6 diesel engine.

Re: Maruti’s plans - Upgraded Swift, SX4 Crossover and an 800cc Diesel car?

My 2 cents:-

Maruti will introduce the new S-Cross, instead of the SX4 crossover, as a locally made unit with the 1.3 diesel. They seem to have some licensing issues with Fiat re the SX4 4x4 crossover marketing in India.

Next will be XA-Alpha based SUV.
New Grand Vitara will come in base on the new Kishashi platform with their new inhouse Diesel engines (hopefully with 4wd & AT!).

Suzuki has a lot of cross licensing issues. That is why they could not launch the Ignis here. Also I suspect some similar issues for the current Jimmy!

But I would really bet my money on Hyundai to serve the market correctly!

"In 2014, Maruti's new global small car (code: YL7) will be the first model to offer parent Suzuki's self-developed 2-cylinder 800-cc diesel powerplant"

"Besides the launch of the YL7, 2014 will also see Maruti launch a new sedan (code: YL1) replacing the SX4, followed by a compact SUV (code: YAD) in the same year."

Re: Maruti’s plans - Upgraded Swift, SX4 Crossover and an 800cc Diesel car?

More on the small diesel engine power Car!

The YL7 which is all set to replace the A-Star and Zen Estilo will make its global début in 2014.

Quote:
The diesel engine plan is on the speed lane for Maruti. While the petrol model of the YL7 will be launched first around the Auto Expo, the start of production for the diesel variant is for later part of the year. The YL7 will be exported from India to various markets and, in some, will also be sold as the new Alto.

The petrol variant of the YL7 will come with a 1-litre engine, most likely the K10 engine that has been doing duty in the Alto, A-Star and Zen Estilo. The diesel variant, with its 800cc mill will be launched at the fag end of the year 2014.
But with the company now focusing on developing their own diesel engines, especially ones with smaller displacements, after the YL7 the engine could find use under the bonnets of other compact cars in the Maruti stable.
