Toyota launches 5 speed Fortuner AT in India. TRD Sportivo now a regular variant

Toyota has launched the 5 speed AT version of Fortuner SUV in India at following prices (ex-Delhi):

Toyota Fortuner 5-speed AT prices:
4×2 AT (with 5 speed) – Rs 22,33,000/- (ex showroom Delhi)
4×2 AT TRD Sportivo (with 5 speed) – Rs 22,93,000/- (ex showroom Delhi)
4×2 MT TRD Sportivo – Rs 21,96,668/- (ex showroom Delhi)

Quote:
The Japanese today have announced a much improved 5-speed AT for the Fortuner. While adding an extra cog, the automatic variant of the Fortuner continues to be available in 4×2 drive only. So if you need to have the AWD version, the manual is still your only option in the Fortuner.
The TRD Sportivo, which was a limited edition model will now be offered as a regular variant on the car. The 5-speed AT transmission is available on the TRD trim as well. Apart from that, a new color called ‘Pearl White Mica’ has been introduced on the car. It will be available on all grades says Toyota.
Commenting on the new introduction Mr. Sandeep Singh, Deputy Managing Director and Chief Operating Office -

The 4×2 automatic transmission is extremely popular, it has been highly appreciated by the customers. The 5 speed AT will further add to the drive quality and comfort. Looking at the overwhelming response for the Fortuner TRD Sportivo and its popularity, we have now regularized this grade for all those looking for a unique sporty image. The bookings will open starting 18th Jan 2013.

The Fortuner demands, nay screams for a 6-speed AT.

On a side note, I like how the Deputy MD of the company himself coolly says that the 4×2 AT is "extremely popular"!

Sure!

This is a good Move. When the world is moving to 6 & 7 speed auto trannies, Toyota was in the spartan world with 4 gears.

5 speed is a must nowadays.

Could someone please share what "Extra" does the TRD Kit offer for that 60,000/- extra.

Actually nothing other than some additional cladding....it is more of a gimmick and nothing significant for an enthusiast. Essentially an all show and no go thing. I wouldn't buy it.

And with this has there been any price increase too? The best part about Toyota is the audacity with which they want to congratulate themselves whenever they launch a new feature as if its some world leading change. Nevertheless good to see some improvement.

Existing buyers must be feeling cheated. This was in the pipeline for long as Thailand started selling this model way back. TKML was just exhausting the Gear Box kits already imported.

Still no news of 4WD AT which is already available in Thailand.

I compared the ex showroom Delhi prices mentioned in the article above with the prices as mentioned on the website which is still not updated and the prices seem the same for the 4x2AT.

Coimbatore Dealer says that 5 speed Auto is already available and ready for delivery. But, How to find that it is not older 4 speed Auto. Is that any way to learn if the one they have now is 5 speed Auto and NOT 4 speed Auto.

Its the old auto's review but I guess it will be updated soon.

'we have now regularized this grade ' means we get only this version now ( and hence costlier) ?

What about a CVT based beast. Then the no of presentscan be easily programmed as demanded. As it stands the Corolla (or rather Altis) now has a seven speed AT using CVT underpinnings.

The additional surge or torque from the massive 3L engine as well as increased output means that the CVT will have a very hard time to put down the power. Rubber band effect will probably be even worst.

The Altis has it since it's a low output/low torque petrol motor that has a linear delivery.

I don't like toyota's attitude towards the indian market. They only improved the product when they realised that the Rexton will start cannibalizing Fortuner sales due to its better features. Till then they were happy selling their product with a cheap 4 speed gearbox and we indians were gobbling it up happily.

Actually, Toyota did not have a choice but to introduce it in India.

You see Toyota gets the Fortuner kits from Thailand. The kits are imported once in a while and probably last a few months till the next lot arrives.

In September, Toyota introduced the 5 speed AT in Thailand. The 5 speed AT kits would have arrived in India by November or December and hence from Jan onwards you get 5 speed AT.

The same was done for the Altis. The facelifted model came to India with a new engine only because in Thailand it was introduced a few months earlier.

It's not the attitude towards the Indian Market. Every manufacturer provide features/options based on market demand and competition. Toyota Corolla Altis AT has 7 speed CVT in India. At the same time, Corolla in USA (much advanced and matured market than India, that too, with more competition) is still sold with age old 4 Speed AT. Is it attitude towards US market? No, it's Business. If market condition favors then why to change? Corolla still sells in big numbers in USA, because as a overall package, it is better than competition as a reliable no-nonsense family car. Same goes for Fortuner in India.

And By the way, Toyota didn't upgrade Fortuner because of Rexton. As explain by Vid6639, they are sourcing the kits from Thailand and they have exhausted all their 4 speed ATs.
