Re: SCOOP! Ford Fusion & Fiesta Hatch spotted @ Chennai

^^ whats with that grill, its so unlike Ford. The waistline is a bit high, but the coupe like styling makes the car look good.

Hi Sujay

You have definitely got it right. It is a GPS antenna. However, apart from navigation purpose, it is also used to capture the vehicle's speed and log it using the data logger that is fitted in the test vehicle. Speed variation divided by time difference will give acceleration / deceleartion. Hence the teeny weeny antenna. It has a magnetic base that helps the antenna to be fixed onto the vehicle's roof. Extra care must be taking while removing that antenna. If it is pulled out by tugging the cable, then the paint on the car's roof will be scratched off.

Cheers

Yes wild child what you said is all true regarding the antenna. We use it on a daily basis on all our testing vehicles. It also serves as a safety purpose from the driver's point of view. If any thing happens to the vehicle, the data logger in the car directly communicates to the base without any manual intervention of driver. So we can always keep a track on car as well as driver.
Actually some have a magnetic base or some of them are sticked on the roof with the industrial glue. Sometimes the paint is scratched but if you happen to see the interiors of these cars, its the worse I can tell.

All new Ford's will feature that grille. Take a look at the facelifted Fiesta in the US:

The difference, old Fusion is still sold in the EMEA countries, soon to be replaced by the New Fusion, New Fusion being sold in the Americas. In here, the old Fusion with LHD is only making its first appearance in India for a test. If they plan to launch the old Fusion here, I would think its still outdated.

Folks, do you really think the GPS unit has to be mounted on the roof to do all the purpose that you mentioned?

Its only the antenna. It is roof mounted only for better connectivity purpose. Just as we see the wireless police radio antennas mounted on their vehicles

Hi anachronix

Yea, regarding connectivity, it is an absolute necessity to install the antenna on the top of the car. Even in this case, while travelling on roads with trees on both sides, you loose communication with the satellites. The more the number of satellites you are connected to, the better it is.

Re: SCOOP! Ford Fusion & Fiesta Hatch spotted @ Chennai

But will the Fusion have that much demand in India? I thought Ford might first consider a car in the Cruze/Corolla/Civic line-up, that is with Focus sedan. There will certainly be a large number of takers. Think it is not in the pipeline.

Fiesta hatch shall be a good competition to i20 and Fabia, if it comes for that price.

Vipin.

Re: SCOOP! Ford Fusion & Fiesta Hatch spotted @ Chennai

On smaller cars that grille looks really odd like its about to puke or something :( Not sure why Ford is taking so much time to launch something above the Fiesta model line in sedans?
Focus was supposed to come to India a while ago (car mags had the pictures on the front cover announcing its arrival), what happened?
