The black beast just looks awesome! This design never seem to get old.
The rear seats at this point could have been much better. Also in picture the color combinations used for seats doesnot say it belong to 1 Cr + vehicle.

The silencer seems to releasing hot gases towards tire. Will it not affect the tire?

You know what, the Range Rover has something to worry about now. People may call it old school, I call it a Classic.

What is the optional stainless steel package that is mentioned? Is it the bull bar and the chrome strip at the sides?

Just a small trivia: The G class was actually created as per the orders of the Shah of Iran way back in the 1970's and is the longest produced Merc. If you think this car is old school, outdated, time to cease production, think again. Below are some of the features it comes with:-

G 63 includes AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC transmission with and ECO start/stop function, AMG sports exhaust system, suspension/damper settings adjusted for the more dynamic handling characteristics via optimised bearings for the automatic gearbox, transfer case and engine cut vibration and noise levels; AMG 5x2 spoke 9.5x20-inch titanium-grey-painted light alloy wheels with high-sheen finish and 275/50 R 20 tyres, AMG high-performance brakes 375x36 millimetres front and 330x20 millimetres rear discs, six-piston fixed front brake calliper from the ML 63 AMG, single-piston floating rear calliper, red brake calliper colour, readjusted ESP with automatic control systems including the start-up assist and a HOLD function with optional trailer coupling, twin-blade radiator grille with four chrome inserts, AMG bumper with three airflow inlets and high-gloss chrome stainless steel inserts, new LED daytime running lamps below the bi-xenon headlamps, stainless-steel running boards and side protective strips with stainless-steel inserts, AMG instrument cluster with colour TFT screen, AMG main menu and separate gear display, plus white-lit AMG sills on all doors, E-SELECT shift lever from SLS AMG, designo leather upholstery with ruffled leather door panelling.

Cheers!

Whoa! I was checking out the news sections and there were these two threads of Gurkha and G63 AMG launches next to each other. When I was telling myself that the BS3 Gurkha @ 8.5L is overpriced, I see THIS. Exterior looks and historical platforms aside, these cousins have more than just family resemblance lol:

PS: And then I peeped through my window outside to see a sumo parked by the road... Its barely 8 in the morning and I've already had enough deja vu for one day..

You know, the exterior design of this is evergreen. Its a car anyone would be proud to keep in their garage based on exterior looks and driving capabilities. The interior however, seems a little sub par for a car that is almost 2 cr on road. While driving capabilities might match the mighty Range Rovers, this definitely looks far less luxurious on the inside imo.

I know this is an icon but wouldn't plonking in 4L V8 diesel make it just a wee bit more easy on the pocket. Perhaps take on the Landies head on.

Look at the glove box, if this was Tata or Mahindra people would have blasted them for the fit and finish. Entertainment system is looking an after market fitment. There were people who are worried about the safety ratings of Scorpios and Safaries how about this 35 year old design? Look at that door handle placement, people couldnt stop criticizing when Mahindra tried the same on Xylo and Quanto. AC controls placement is an ergnomic disaster and placing of the exhaust looks wired. People like me still love this and we call it a monster :).

Wrong, the G class was produced for the German army!

Wow! A 1.45 Cr Sumo. Tat's costly:D

Seriously, I think Merc needs to add some dose of modernity to this SUV.

Actually, German Army were not the first customers.

"Eventually, the decisive factor to produce this car was the Shah of Persia’s interest in the project in the mid-seventies. This then very important shareholder of Mercedes-Benz-ordered 20,000 units for the (then) Iranian Imperial Army. When the project finally had become reality the order was cancelled by the meanwhile governing leaders of the Islamic republic.

However, the production could start thanks to the orders from the German Federal border police and the Argentine Army, followed shortly afterwards by the orders from the Norwegian military who ordered vehicles in long wheel base versions."

The German Army had chosen VW Iltis first.
"Back in the spring of 1973, the Bundeswehr was briefed about the development of the project and in June of the same year the conception of the car was subject to evaluation by the Military. It was then expected by Mercedes that they would win the bid for supplying the new light cross country vehicle to replace the DKW Munga at the end of the seventies, which was expected to amount to 8,000 units. However, in 1976, the VW Iltis won the contract, apparently for its interchangeability of parts with the Munga and its lower price. The superior quality of the G was never put into question, but a joint test of both contenders by the Military was never undertaken. The contracts from the Bundeswehr followed only later, when the time to replace the Iltis had come. However, we must thank GFG for not making the G project dependant on the bid to supply the German army. Otherwise, the G might never have existed."
