Because, no way could that C-Class have costed as little as 20Lakh in Germany/wherever it was manufactured. An imported car attracts 100+% taxes.

Re: Volvo Cars considering local assembly in India

When I spoke to Volvo during the S90 drive, they felt that local assembly is an unnecessary distraction at the moment due to the sheer logistics. The expense that goes into this negates the higher customs duties.

My guess is that they might be looking at local manufacture of the V40 successor, XC60 and the S60 replacement as they will share a similar modular platform

Volvo likely to start local assembly, announcement soon

Recent media reports suggest that the manufacturer is close to making the final decision regarding its CKD plant in India and an official announcement is expected to be made sometime next week.

Actually xc60 and s60 will be based on a shortened SPA platform(same as the s90). V40 is gonna be on an altogether different CMA platform that is going to be shared with Geely for their Chinese cars.

I really doubt they would setup local assembly as it doesn't make much sense considering their limited volumes in India.

Re: Volvo Cars considering local assembly in India

Volvo to locally assemble cars in India. Announcement to be made this week. Will go solo and will not partner with any local manufacturers.

Rumored to start operations around Bangalore.

Quote:
Volvo’s first assembly plant will start with manufacturing the 40 series of cars. This makes sense given that Volvo is all set to usher in their new 40 range with the XC40, S40 and V40.
These cars will be showcased at motorshows later this year with an Indian launch in 2019. Volvo might initially bring in these cars as CBUs and then, once the assembly plant is ready, roll out the CKD versions. This is expected to happen in 2019, given the general timelines as well as the complexity of setting up assembly lines.
At a later stage, Volvo Cars India is expected to bring in CKD versions of all its existing model line-ups, except for the complex hybrid iterations.
