Re: The "Low Mileage" Car Thread! How low is your running?

Hi guys, I dont think my ride will break any low mileage records here, but just for the record:

2010 Nov. Santro Xing.
KMS to date: 9041.

So that comes to 2 yrs- 4 months- 10 days = 9041 kms.

Reason for low mileage:
1) I work from home.
2) For single trips I have my Pulsar 220Fi.
3) My Wife is doing her Ph.D so she usually does her work from Home.
4) My retired parents and I we live in the same house, and they have a 2005 Zen MPFI, bought in 2011 from a family friend. So we tend to use that when we need to go places where the roads are bad like into the hills of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Sikkim etc.
5) I live in a Tier III city which is pretty small. A trip to the heart of town and back usually is only a 25 km run.

The Idea is to try and keep one car in tip top condition and use the other when rough terrain is unavoidable. Whats the point in having two rattling old cars right?

Anyways, but in the future I guess things will change as in 2014-15 we plan to get rid of the Zen and maybe get a bigger car like a Scorpio. When that happens then the Santro will be demoted for Rough use, and quick errands. I guess then it will rake up the kms.

P.S Guys, this thread would be so much more interesting if you could post pictures of your low mileage rides along with your posts

Re: The "Low Mileage" Car Thread! How low is your running?

Its a nice thread. Few things that come to my mind about maintenance of such vehicles as follows:-
-Crank the engine at least three times a week.
-Oil change as per the time specified.
-Drive the car on pleasure rides once in a while so that dust and mud is shaken off,
engine is worked, battery is charged, tyre are rolled over, break cylinders and other
parts of the breaking mechanism are exercised, suspension, stering and other rubber
parts do not start decaying and especially the hydraulics are worked.
-Maximum damage occur while cranking the engine first time in the day, therefore low
milage car of older generation may not always be better than a new car that has
done more milage, since the wear and tear on engine may be less.

Re: The "Low Mileage" Car Thread! How low is your running?

Gosh, this is comming out interesting and I have got serious competetiors! lol

That one with 5200 kms in 10 years seems to beat all others hands down.

I have managed to pile up 10k kms in 2.5 years that accounts to around 11 kms a day. Too less for a BHPian who loves to drive. Blame it on petrol prices!

Have a friend who got a 2010 nano, and covered only 1500 kms till date! It comes to almost a KM a day. No one from the family likes to drive, and hence, it lies idle most of the time. I do take it off for a ride sometimes, and thats how's the ODO ticking.

Re: The "Low Mileage" Car Thread! How low is your running?

Good to see such a thread in this forum!!.

Let me also post a unique issue in this regard.

Though my car is not competing in this category, i have a different problem.
My new car has already clocked 5600km in 6 months, but the issue is that 90% of that was covered in 3 long distance drives. The remaining time, it lies idle, except for some meagre 5-10 kms on Sunday.

Being a turbocharged diesel one, is it the right way of treating the car?

I have read somewhere that diesel cars have to be used regularly.

Experts pls. advice,

That dubious honour goes to me.
Maruti 800, January 2003 — 5,200 kms or 520 kms an year or 43 kms a month.

But the rest of the cars aren't too bad.

Opel Corsa Swing 1.6, June 2003 — 72,000 kms or 7325 kms an year or 610 kms a month.
W124 E220, August 2010 — 20,000 kms or 7750 kms an year or 645 kms a month.
W124 E250D, February 2013 — 2,000 kms or 1000 kms a month. (This will reduce, right now I'm driving it just for the fun of it.)

There is an article on how to treat your turbo diesel car right here on T-BHP. I have read it and from that what I have gathered is that as long as you idle the car for 2 or 3 minutes after every drive, you'll be all right. The reason being that the turbo charger is oil cooled, so you must allow the oil to circulate and cool the turbo down before switching off the car. If not, then the oil will coagulate and in the long run, it'll damage the turbo.

A link to the article - http://www.team-bhp.com/tech-stuff/i...o-charged-cars .

Cheers!

Thanks Viraat for your reply.

I follow that rule regularly ever since seeing that thread. But long distance ride don't come often. For small city trip, I avoid taking the car, as the city traffic here in Mumbai is quite disturbing.

Thats why it is being stationed at the parking lot for quite long time.

Re: The "Low Mileage" Car Thread! How low is your running?

Bought my Spark in May 2011 with 28k on the odo.
Right now its almost 2 years and the odo stands at 40k. Just 12k kms in 2 years!
Sometimes my car covers too many kms in a single month and sometimes it does only a couple of hundred kms.

From Jan'13 till today my car has hardly run 500 kms because first I fractured my hand and then after few weeks I busted my knee.

Re: The "Low Mileage" Car Thread! How low is your running?

I have a friend, she very enthusiatically brought a brand new Aviator scooter, after 4 years the odo reads 3400kms only
She stays in mumbai.

My CD100, bought in 1989 has just covered 85,000K and is still with me

I guess we should have a separate thread for WEEKEND only cars.

Re: The "Low Mileage" Car Thread! How low is your running?

My 2yr year old A-star with just 6800 kms on the odo. I actually celebrate after crossing every thousand.

I live away from my home in kolkata in bhubaneswar and so the car has no family duty to attend to. However the car runs regularly but with my office just 3 kms from my house, the mileage is bound to be low. It does some mid distance trips sometimes with my friends on weekends from BBSR to Puri. The only long distance the car runs is from BBSR-Kolkata and back once a year.

It still smells new after two years though.

My Dad's VW Polo bought in 2010 Dec have crossed just 7.5K kms till now. A large part of that is contributed by me whenever I go back to my home town, once in a long while.

Re: The "Low Mileage" Car Thread! How low is your running?

Nice thread.

Having 3 Four wheelers, 2 drivers and 1 Scooty, most of my vehicle too have low mileage.

Yamaha Ray bought in Jan 13 had done 200 kms.

Audi A4 bought in November 12 has done 1800 kms, however this would improve as I have started letting my driver use it. I would use it once or twice a week to office which is 10 kms away. After Rats chewed my car and broke the jinx, I got over its newness factor and gave it to the driver to drive me around.

Toyota Innova ( 3 years old) has done 40000 odd kms. It's been to a lot of places and been through 2 major accidents.

Honda City Auto ( 2 years old) has done 11000 kms. This is/was used solely by my wife, who was working earlier out of the house, but now works from home. This was our favored car, because of the Auto tranny and convenience for city traffic and short distance, till I bought the Ray. Now it isused only by my Dad, when he goes to the gym in the mornings.

My Logan was purchased in 2008 and run only 30, 000 kms! The first year, the car was in my home town and no body used it. Later I moved to Chennai and my home was 500 meters from office! Moved to bangalore last year and clocked 12, 000 kms in 8 months!! Amazing mileage of 24 on the highway and 18 in bangalore traffic !
