Mercedes-India discontinues R-Class. Global phase out by 2015

Merc India discontinues R-Class from India. As consumer preferences shift more towards SUVs and Crossovers, the model will be phsed out globally in 2015.

Quote:
The luxury MPV from the Mercedes-Benz stable, the R-Class is no longer available with the Indian dealerships. The reason being poor demand for the luxury MPV in India as well as globally. The production for the R-Class will be axed globally by 2015.

....The Stuttgart based luxury automaker also has no plans to introduce the next generation R-Class globally as the demand is now shifting rapidly towards SUVs or crossovers for customers looking out for spacious vehicles....

.... while the diesel variant retailed for Rs. 59 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi). At this price point, Indian buyers are preferring luxury SUVs rather than MPVs, hence the low demand and discontinuation of the vehicle.

The R class was withdrawn from the US market last year. Given the huge share of Mercedes SUVs are sold in the US, this was bound to happen. There still are enough options within the Mercedes family - E class wagon, GL class etc.

Re: Mercedes-India discontinues R-Class. Global phase out by 2015

The Aria in many ways was inspired from the previous R-Class. And though positioned as a Crossover it essentially is a Luxury MPV/MUV to many. So if that market is going down what happens to the inspiration?

They do need to make it more sport for one so that it has atleast half an "S" from the SUV and is atlease viewed as a Crossover (in looks rather than just in stated advertisements) rather than a luxury MPV.
