Re: SCOOP Pics! Next-gen 2014 Hyundai i20 spotted testing in India

This could well be the sedan based on next gen i20 rather than the next gen i20 hatch, seeing the C-pillar. I don't think Hyundai will make such a drastic change in next gen i20 hatch. Rather, they changed the C-pillar for the hatch-to-sedan conversion, I guess. (There is a kind of next gen i10'nish look for the C-pillar, but seeing the bonnet length, it should be i20 only.)

And for me, if this is a sedan, the rear profile will be too similar to DZire.

I am wondering on the struggle the designers experiencing to design these kind of cars, thanks to India govt's norms for sub-4m tax slab.

Sorry to say but your speculation is off the mark. This is the 2015 i20 hatch back. It has been spotted testing around the world with the same camouflage. As I mentioned, all Hyundai cars under test have these projection at the back.

It took me a long time to recognize this car. The side profile is some what closer to the HB20 as well.

There is no way this car is a compact sedan.

edit: link from korea where this car has been spotted shows it's identical to indian camouflaged car:

The i20 measures 3940 mm, to be precise. And the magic number these days is 4 meters. Now if you're suggesting that some sedan based on the same bodyshell can be concocted within a room of 6 centimeters, I think that's a little too exaggerated even for the already struggling designers that you've aptly put.

And FYI, Hyundai Brazil just launched the HB20S sedan based on the i20 and it sits 4.2 meters long. Attaching a few pictures below.

I too believe this is an India specific i20 sedan

Re: SCOOP Pics! Next-gen 2014 Hyundai i20 spotted testing in India

Any chances that there is a support for the canopy at the back so that it doesn't not interfere with the rear windscreen wiper, and hence looks like an extended projection? Especially as the monsoon is upon us?

Re: SCOOP Pics! Next-gen 2014 Hyundai i20 spotted testing in India

Doesn't it look more like a compact version of Chevy Captavia or more like iX30?
It looks like a lowered compact SUV to me from that picture, That is pretty large extension of boot area for a hatchback, If it really turns out to be one, i gotta say, thats the largest hatchback ever and that is ever going to be..
Doubts are arising in me if Hyundai is testing any compact SUV's like iX30 to launch in India, Its time they compete against Dusters and ECOSports.

+1. The rear in the first picture has a steep fall. Could possibly be a compact sedan.

For some reason I find this really funny

Anyway, the high brake light makes me think this is a hatch.

Brake lights mounted high aren't conclusive enough IMO. In fact, Hyundai's sedans have their brake lights mounted higher than usual. Check out fluidic Elantra for instance.

That said, I do believe it's a hatch and not a compact-sedan.

I think he was referring to the high mount stop lamp seen in the below pic. Usually in sedans including Elantra, high mount stop lamp is fixed on top of the parcel tray and not towards the top of rear windscreen.

Re: SCOOP Pics! Next-gen 2014 Hyundai i20 spotted testing in India

I reckon, they should get Hyundai i30 here. its bigger and better. I saw on in Egypt in 2011.

High mounted break lights are always an advantage for small vehicles. hope it sees day light.

Actually, I was referring to the single brake light at the top of the rear windscreen.

Exactly!
So the proper name for it is stop lamp? Didn't know that.

Sorry chaps! I misunderstood. My bad. I don't think there's a different name for it.

Anyway, I believe this car would be very disproportionate if it had an extension that's THAT small. It wouldn't work, even as a notchback body-style.

Re: SCOOP Pics! Next-gen 2014 Hyundai i20 spotted testing in India

IMO, this is not i20 sedan. Changing the profile of rear door and making changes in C-pillar is not an easy task. It involved a lot of investment and also related research/engineering. Hyundai wont do it, certainly not for a car which is already 3990+mm long. The earlier non fluidic i20 was 3940mm in length, and the current fluidic i20 is 3990+mm long. The car in camouflaged images, atleast from profile, looks longer than the current i20 which instantly puts it off the tax benefit brigade.

Also, at the current price, the diesel 1.4 i20 is quite near to Verna 1.4 diesel. Just like what Dzire did to SX4, with current pricing of i20 and Verna, the i20 sedan might hit both, Verna and i20 hatch.

This could be certainly a new car, may be the new i20, but IMO, certainly not the i20 sedan.
