Re: SCOOP Pics! Next-gen 2014 Hyundai i20 spotted testing in India

I was in the market for a new car and the last cars that remained on the list were the Rapid and the i20 Asta CRDI. The Rapid because, the deal I was offered was irresistible, which brought it only slightly above my budget.
However I was still apprehensive of the notorious Skoda A.S.S.
The Hyundai salesperson pleaded ignorance of an impending model replacement of the i20, last week. However, when I met him this Tuesday, he said that he attended a training that morning, and Hyundai announced that the new i20 would be launched in October.
He also mentioned that the new model is bigger than the current one, and will be similar to the i30. Hyundai is apparently waiting for the budget to decide on the price and there is wide expectation that taxes will be reduced.
Finally, he advised me to wait for 3 more months to see the new car and decide.

Re: SCOOP Pics! Next-gen 2014 Hyundai i20 spotted testing in India

For a car of that weight they better put in the 1.4 Verna petrol engine. The existing diesel engine should do fine. Both times I drove the 1.2, I've been disappointed with the i20 with the way it moves. Dull low-end torque, the response time has a lag which is a disappointment in the city and when the speed does pick-up, its time to slow down again in the choked roads. The steering is as numb as they come and you will have zero sense of the terrain you travel on. I like to have a sense of driving, not floating. The steering is light & far from direct.

These issues have to be sorted in the new model and sure hope the 1.2 engine is stopped except in Grand i10. It has paper figures of 84 ps and 114nm torque but in real world it's far slower. I'm not someone who wants sportiness or a 1.6 engine in a hatch, I just want quick response/torque and power for city movement. The 1.2 petrol engines of i20, Polo(3cyl), Micra and Figo can best be described as an absolute mismatch of power:weight. The Getz beats the i20 hollow in every aspect inspite of being a predecessor. Grand i10 felt quite refined in comparison with a sharper steering & acceptable feedback for an EPS. If Hyundai want to redeem themselves they better tune the i20 as an out & out drivers car. Features are secondary.

Dont know if this has been shared yet, but rear discs have been confirmed from the image below. Also, note the unusual glow pattern of the rear LED break lights:

Hyundai India, it seems, have thankfully fixed the issue!

This is the interior of the European spec, next-generation i20. Note the poor design (so typical of European cars) where the individual doors LACK an internal lock lever:

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is the interior of the India spec, next-generation i20, which has been spotted testing here (Image courtesy: IAB). It does have an internal lock lever on each individual door, like all other Hyundais sold here (AFAIK). This is how it should be (no offence to those who prefer the European design) in India, a country where people even go to the extent of folding away the rear seatbelts permanently, or rendering then unusable in many other ways:

Thank God for Hyundai's thoughtfulness and willingness to adapt to local conditions. Despite being from an LHD country, they provide only ergonomic RHD control stalks on all their cars (with the light stalk on the right side). Now they have also made the much needed change to the door lock design, in what is essentially a car primarily meant for Europe.

Re: SCOOP Pics! Next-gen 2014 Hyundai i20 spotted testing in India

The all-new 2015 Hyundai i20 will be christened as the Grand i20 for India and launched in September 2014, as per an exclusive scoop by the guys at Motor Vikatan.

Quote:
Exclusive: Hyundai has stopped the production of current - gen i20. The last i20 rolled off the assembly line at 3.15 pm today (4/7/2014).

Exclusive: All-New Hyundai i20 will not be called simply as 'i20'. Our sources say that it will be called as 'Grand i20' and it will be launched in India in the month of September.

So does this mean no i20 and Grand i20 together like they did with i10 and Grand i10 ?

Re: SCOOP Pics! Next-gen 2014 Hyundai i20 spotted testing in India

If the Motor Vikatan report turns out to be true, then one can expect very competitive pricing for the next generation i20. It should start from about the same price as the current i20 if it's going to be a full model replacement. This means the new car cannot be longer than the old one by more than 5 mm, as the current one is already 3995 mm long. It definitely looks wider and the wheelbase may also be slightly longer, which should translate into a more spacious rear seat.

The engines may remain the same, but I wish Hyundai makes a leap forward by bringing in its new turbo-petrol engines. The 3-cyl. Kappa 1.0 TCI (turbocharged & intercooled Mpfi) which churns out ~ 105 PS or the 3-cyl. Kappa 1.0 T-GDI (direct injection turbo petrol) that can be tuned to produce either 100 PS or 120 PS would give the heavy car more shove than the current 4-cyl. Kappa 1.2 VTVT with 84 PS. And they should be eligible for the lower excise slab when compared to the 4-cyl. Gamma 1.4 VTVT which also produces a three-digit power output.

At a later stage, they can bring in an N performance variant powered by the Kappa 1.2 T-GDI with ~ 130 PS or better still, unleash the Gamma 1.4 T-GDI beast that churns out 204 PS and 265 Nm of torque.

Re: SCOOP Pics! Next-gen 2014 Hyundai i20 spotted testing in India

Hyundai New i20 revealed. Designed to primarily appeal to European tastes, the new i20 features clean crisp lines and very few exaggerated ‘fluidic’ like flourishes.
Quote:
With its long wheelbase and ample cabin it is also clear that this new i20 will be large and comfortable on the inside. Expected to go on sale here sometime in September, the new i20 will come with a raft of new and exciting technology, both on the inside and out. Hyundai’s smooth running 89bhp 1.4 diesel will be the mainstay here and 83bhp 1.2 petrol Kappa engine will be carried over from the Xcent as well. And the new i20 will also come with a five speed automatic gearbox as well

Re: SCOOP Pics! Next-gen 2014 Hyundai i20 spotted testing in India

Dont know whats the difference between the 2 cars in terms of specs but one difference I could notice is that the Red i20 has a black C-pillar, while in case of Blue i20 it is body color.

As the report indicates,
"the rising shoulder line and sloping roof meet at the steeply angled ‘C’ (or rearmost) pillar and some versions of the new i20 will also come with a blacked out ‘C’ pillar; for that much sought after floating roof impression". Could be the "Performance" variant ?

They might have got their arms twisted and be denied their usual first exclusive slot

The car looks cool.. I hope they upgrade the petrol engine.
Also, the steering is too light and toy-like which needs to be improved.
Did they fix the problem with the AC?

The car can set the sales chart on fire
