I came to this thread very late, and I am very very confused. Tata is barking up the wrong tree.
World over, manufacturers can only dream of being the first in a segment. Tata has it handed onto a platter

1. Tata was the first car maker to come with a diesel hatchback in the price range. Nothing, I repeat nothing came close. there was no competition for years.
2. Tata was the first manufacturer to offer a large hatch with big seats at the price of a small hatchback
3. Tata was the first manufacturer to create a segment for sub 6L diesel sedan, and even cheaper cars
4. Tata was the first manufacturer to make a sub 10L 4WD SUV with all creature comforts

This kind of dream run is beyond the fantasies of most manufacturers. But month after month, Tata hands over the sales to competition on platter.

The problem with Tata is not that it does not have the next killer car. the problem with Tata is that it does not have a car which runs like a car should. If Tata fixes that, everything else will fall in place.

Very well put. You have not even listed the biggest design innovation of TML, the Nano. Not to mention the equally long list of achievements in the commercial vehicle side of their business, capped by the Tata Prima truck range.

But even so, its good on the part of Tata to interact with its customers in a variety of ways. Its good to know what is expected of you, and steps like this "Ideator" idea is a good way to do that.

IMO, To fight competition, Creativity is all that an honest person can have. Tata manages that with VFM prices! And thats one of the reasons they find themselves in pioneering creations.

An honest person is often left helpless in India, thats when sheer creative intellect pulls you through.

All Tata needs to do is sort out the ASS issues.

GN: With due regards to your post, I beg to differ that 'all Tata needs to sort out is the ASC issues'. No, its more than that. They have to do a lot of catching up in terms of designing the product itself and that too, not only in terms of exterior designing, but also the quality of materials and also quality of workmanship. They indeed have come a long way since the 1998 Indica, but they must realize that its not a competition with themselves- but with others.
To come on top, they have to beat others in our own backyard in all departments, since no one is going to put in their hard earned money to buy a Tata product just for the sake of been seen as a patriot.

Oh ofcourse. No doubts about the fact that they need a new design philosophy. Even during the meet he told they're getting international designers to explore new concepts.

They're working on the workmanship, there's this new concept of "Don't ACCEPT-BUILD-SHIP defects". Off-late I've come across a fair bit of instances where owners had almost NIL component failures (specifically in the Vista).

Specific mention coz a forum member recently came across some problems with a dealer. I've had feedback collection related issues with the same dealer. TATA needs to tighten the noose around ASC's ASAP.

They should get some of their concepts to reality. Hardly any of them shown at frankfurt are now reality. As someone said, shed the taxi image and change the manza to prima and vista to something looking like the manza hybrid. Also get a complete interior overhaul for anything below the indigo eCS
