Very interesting read. And yes, Ambassador is the best taxi no doubt about it. It's the best car in the world if you don't have to drive it yourself.

The unfortunate part: Kolkata, which always stuck to Ambassadors in the taxi segment is finally bidding farewell. Ambassadors do not come in BS IV emission norms in the diesel section (only CNG) and so there is no other option. A few years down the line we may not see Ambassador taxis even on Kolkata roads. Sad thing.

Actually it is indeed a great car to be chauffeured in or be used as a Taxi. Good boot space, roomy interiors and comfortable seats. Plus the feeling of experiencing something "traditional".

BTW whats the FE and maintenance costs of the diesel variant?

Surprisingly blind reporting by IBN. It was more of a fun race demolition even which Richard Hammond takes part in almost every season. The Amby is in noway the best taxi in the world. I do like it however and do understand that for its time it really served the Indian public in good stead.

I do find the Wagon R to be a good cab in Mumbai.

Ambassador is a notch higher on rear seat comfort in comparison to most Indian cars. It had a high seat with good thigh support and sofa like seating posture.

However it fairs badly in terms of ride quality, noise levels and equipment and hence hard to believe the recognition.

I have quite a few doubts about Amby being a good taxi. I think it is one of the worst car in production. The only good thing, may be, is the rear seat comfort. Rest is far below from average.

First of all, the way the taxis are maintained especially in Kolkata they can never be termed as the best taxi in the world. No doubt Amby is a great car but look at the way they are taken care of. You cant pull up the windows, seats are eaten up by rats, and what not.

Secondly, Whatever was showed in TG was more for fun than any real test.

It is like a Lifetime Achievement Award for the car that has broken all records in the world and has become the car that has been produced for the longest time, from the same assembly line, for 55 years and is still rockin'. HM has despite all odds kept the Ambassadors rolling out from the Uttarpara (W.B.) assembly line.
It sells at least more cars per month than many other contemporary ones and has till now monopolised the Kolkata taxi market.
As rightly put by some fellow bhpians here, many of the Kolkata taxis are quite ill-maintained and the owners/drivers appear to be only geared up to make the maximum bucks, sans any maintenance.











Ambassador is also the uncrowned National Car of India, that has been used by commoners, leaders, rich and poor alike during its hey days.
We can only hope that HM gives some attention, applies its mind to upgrade the car (the BS IV version of the 1500DSL is yet to come) and present a contemporary Ambassador that can shoo some of the competition in the C segment.
