re: General Motors temporarily suspends production and sale of the Tavera & Sail diesels

Worst thing to have happened to a newly launched product! Chevrolet can ill afford to delay the production as competition is severe. Already beat and spark are degrowing and this production halt for a model which is picking up spells trouble.

I hope they sort it out ASAP.

Now ACI confirms the same:

Quote:
GMI has launched an investigation to track the fault and, according to sources, is expected to restart production of the stopped models from July 1.
It appears that was a surprise checking from Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) this month led to the discovery of issues with the BS III diesel motors in the Sail saloon & hatch & the Tavera. While the 2.5L direct injection Tavera engine did not match up to emission norms, the Fiat-sourced 1.3L common-rail diesel engine in the Sail saloon & hatch is facing ignition problems.

It is not clear anywhere whether the BS4 engines, 2L Sonalika sourced engine for the Tavera & 1.3L TDCi on Sail hatch & saloon had problems. And the dealers in Delhi NCR haven't stopped taking orders & delivering vehicles either.

Re: General Motors temporarily suspends production and sale of the Tavera & Sail dies

Does anyone know if production has restarted for these Diesels.

Especially interested in the status of the Sail Hatchback.
Thanks in advance.

Re: General Motors temporarily suspends production and sale of the Tavera & Sail dies

GM to resume Sail production by month end, Tavera BS-III in August.

India today said it will resume production of the diesel variants of Sail compact car and sedan by the end of this month, which was suspended last month due to quality issue.

The company had said it had identified a potential emission performance issue with the Tavera BS-III model and a quality issue with the Sail HB & NB diesel variants.

Re: General Motors temporarily suspends production and sale of the Tavera & Sail dies

For one, the attitude of their dealerships need reconsideration. I walk into Kropex for my second car from them. The FIRST thing the SA says is that "there's a month and half waiting period". Ok then. Walked away, went to VW next door and almost getting ready to get the Vento.

Re: General Motors temporarily suspends production and sale of the Tavera & Sail dies

I feel, in Indian market any automobile brand that has Chinese connection will struggle to sustain. Chevrolet can taste success, if they bring an all new product to India with minimum Chinese connection.

In the past we have see many products in motorcycle and car segment.

Re: General Motors temporarily suspends production and sale of the Tavera & Sail dies

Hmmm. Chinese product, and production suspension. It is going to be a very steep uphill road for GM now

Hopefully with increased stake in GM India(over SAIC) we should see better models in the coming years. else it will be too late for GM

GM India issues recall for 1.3 SMARTEC diesel variants of Chevrolet Sail U-VA & sedan

General Motors has recalled 4,000 units of the Chevrolet Sail diesel, sold in hatchback and sedan guises. Production of the Sail diesel twins was stopped on the 3rd of June, 2013, with General Motors India citing "quality issues" in the cars' 1.3 liter turbo diesel engines, as the reason for the production halt.

Now though, the quality issues seem to have been ironed out as General Motors India has restarted production of the Sail diesel twins. 4,000 owners of the Chevrolet Sail diesel hatchback and sedan will be notified of the recall by General Motors and their cars will be fixed free of cost.

The Chevrolet Sail twins are available with 2 engine options: a 1.2 liter petrol engine and a 1.3 liter turbo diesel engine. Production of the petrol engined model of the Chevrolet Sail twins continued even as that of the diesel engined models was halted about three months ago.

General Motors India is yet to announce the exact nature of the quality issues that have plagued the 1.3 liter turbo diesel engines used on Sail twins. Notably, the same engine is also used on the Chevrolet Enjoy MPV.

Update: We learn that the 1.3 liter turbo diesel engine's crankshaft hub bolt that could see slippage/breakage is the reason for the recall.

However, production of the diesel powered Enjoy MPV has continued uninterrupted. The turbo diesel engine that the Sail diesel twins and the Enjoy use, is a 1,248 cc-4 cylinder unit that was developed by Fiat.

This engine has been licensed to be used by General Motors, as a part of the settlement of the failed Fiat-GM merger. This turbo diesel engine is hugely popular and powers a range of cars in India, from Maruti Suzukis and Tatas to Fiats and Chevrolets.

General Motors India has been in the eye of a storm lately, following the fudging of emission details of the Tavera MPV. The Indian government has initiated a probe into the matter. The Sail U-VA hatchback was launched late last year, as a replacement to the Aveo U-VA while the Sail sedan was launched early this year, as the replacement to the Aveo sedan.

Both cars are aimed at delivering good sales volumes for GM India. The Sail twins were developed by SAIC, General Motors' Chinese partner. The cars are hot sellers in the Chinese car market. In India though, both the Sail hatchback and sedan have been average sellers at best, with the 3 month production halt not helping matters either.

re: GM India issues recall for 1.3 MJD diesel versions of Chevrolet Sail U-VA & sedan

As expected but the fix doesn't seem to be a very small one considering the issue at hand and the fact that they have not mentioned anything about the actual fix.

Its certainly tough times ahead for GM once they restart the production of these cars to get reasonable numbers.

Not sure if they would be able to address the issue without having to open up the engine, since it would be done by dealers and could lead to other issues down the line if they don't put everything back properly. Thoughts?

One problem after the other and really no one to blame other than themselves. This is going to further impact the already shaky perception which the market has for GM.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/b...w/22243437.cms

"part of its commitment to quality and satisfying its customers" , nice words to say during a press conference , but in reality GM has proven that this is at the end of the day just words , this so called belief does not really appear to be upheld across the company clearly as we have seen in the recent past.

Re: General Motors temporarily suspends production and sale of the Tavera & Sail dies

The proble is with Crankshaft bolt in the diesel unit. Nothing major, but can be a issue with long term reliable performance of the motor as well as during repairs when the bolt is required to be opened. In addition to this there are few other small issues. Nothing pertaining to what we saw for Tavera.

Cheers

Would it need the engine head to be opened for the replacement?

Re: General Motors temporarily suspends production and sale of the Tavera & Sail dies

My only question for GM, why could they not mend the issue with the recall last month. Successive recalls for this car will simply kill any enthusiasm in market, & buyers will be hard to find.

I have no doubt that this is a competent product, despite being Chinese . But, I am sure it will suffer because of company's idiocies.

Another question - Why only 4000 cars? I'm sure with the numbers that they had reported as bookings withing initial days of launch the number should have been much more (being diesel mill). It seems that there was problem with some parts supplier or a batch of parts , & not all supplies till date.
