Audi India has given the A4 saloon a new engine tune: 177 Bhp-380 Nm. This information was picked up by Team-BHP moderator Vids6639. The 2 liter TDI turbo diesel engine on the A4, in the 177 Bhp state of tune means that the base-diesel variants of the car now hop on to a higher state of tune. All engines in the Audi A4 line up are turbo charged and they also feature direct injection.



The launch of the Audi A4 with the 177 Bhp-380 Nm engine is a key factor that will differentiate the luxury sedan from the existing offerings in the market. Previously, the A4 sedan's base diesel variant was available with a 143 Bhp-320 Nm state of tune for the 2 liter TDI turbo diesel engine. The lower powered diesel was mated to a CVT automatic gearbox, while the drive select system was a notable omission.



The older state of tune for the entry level A4 diesel meant that the car's power and torque outputs weren't different from say the Volkswagen Jettas, the Skoda Lauras and the Superbs of this world, while direct competitors offered much more powerful engines. If anything, the lower state of tune only made the Audi A4, priced at a considerable premium over the aforementioned Volkswagen group cars, seem overpriced and under-speced to potential buyers.



Now though, Audi has made amends with a higher state of tune for the A4 sedan. The more powerful diesel engined Audi A4 will be priced higher by about 1.25 lakh rupees when compared with the 140 Bhp version. Team-BHP learns that the 140 Bhp version of the Audi A4 diesel will be discontinued soon. Discount hunters may take note as the possibility of heavy discounting on the leftover stock of 140 Bhp Audi A4 Diesels seems high.



Apart from the change in engine tune, the A4 diesel with the more powerful 2 liter TDI motor will continue to be offered in three variants: Premium, Premium Plus and Navigation. The car's 2 liter TDI engine is mated to an 8 speed automatic gearbox, that drives its front wheels. This is a step up from the 140 Bhp engine's CVT automatic gearbox. The Drive Select system offered on the A4 with the new diesel engine works with the engine, gearbox and steering, offering the driver three modes to choose from: Comfort, Dynamic and Custom.

The Audi A4 is also available in two other engines, a 1.8 liter TFSI turbo petrol motor that outputs 170 Bhp-350 Nm and a 3 liter TDI turbo diesel engine that is good for 245 Bhp-500 Nm. Competition for the Audi A4 in India, comes from the BMW 3-Series, Mercedes Benz C-Class and the Volvo S60. The A4 is assembled in India, through CKD kits, at Audi's Aurangabad assembly unit.

It should have had the 177bhp engine from day one. I think 1.25l is a bit high considering all they have added is this engine which was already being produced/assembled in India, and the drive select which does NOT alter the suspension in this case.

Also I think the 8 speed is a Multitronic CVT too, which is offered with the 177bhp engine on the A6.

Finally Audi has done it. Was always wondering why audi india have offered lower state of tune, when a segment lower has same power. Bit late, but nevertheless, they can compete more aggressively now.

Yes, 1.25lakh is too high considering the lonely change.

They had this option earlier aswell and sold only few but could not deliver to customers later. Hope at least from now on they keep up their words.

Googled for the pricing of the A4 and surprisingly the pricing is out: Audi A4 177 BHP is only a lakh over the 143 bhp version. Pricing starts at Rs. 32.26 lakhs. There are 3 variants of the A4 177bhp. I called a nearby dealership and they said that the company now wants to promote the 177BHP version only and will make the 143BHP in limited numbers. Another update was that the 143BHP A4 now gets discounts of over Rs.3 lakhs.

I wonder how much difference would it make to:
a) The drivability now (esp. the power)
b) The fuel efficiency
c) The sales of the A4

Or is it just that Audi is trying to pave way for the A3 sedan since they have to place the A3 below the A4? And the A3 will most probably get the 2.0-lt diesel engine only!

The existing Audi A4 was engine wise a VW Jetta Highline AT or a Laura Diesel AT with some high end comfort features. With this new model the A4 owners can zip past the jettas and lauras and get the bang for the extra bucks they pay to own the A4.

The A4 was always underspec-ed wrt both diesel and petrol engines and the price did not justify the premium Audi was charging.

The Passat tune of 2.0TDI is welcome (however, the quantum of price increase seems not justified) The 2.0 TDI 177ps still is lower in output than the 320d and the C220CDI has more torque. That brings the upgrade in perspective.

This is a bit off-topic but does Audi or for that matter, BMW, offer any variant with manual transmission? I drove the A4 automatic and somehow that rush while driving isn't there.

No manuals from the German trio except the earlier M3 which was/is a CBU. And there are minimal chances that they will offer one in the near future.

The rush is lacking in the earlier A4 cos of heavy kerb weight compared with a lower power output than the competition and a slow CVT gearbox.

Yes, that’s right. The 8-speed gearbox indeed is the Multitronic CVT. Though not a huge update, this may provide the ageing A4 some firepower to stay in the competition, until the next gen model arrive in early 2015.

I don't think it'll be that easy to 'zip past' the Jettas and Lauras for this upgraded A4 either as those cars have the advantage of the quick shifting DSG box, plus some weight advantage as well.

Audi now offers the Q3 S with a manual transmission. 2L 140BHP, 6 speed manual and front wheel drive.

Too little too late but theyv finally done it. I do not think the pricing is bad at all considering the 1 series has been priced at 30 lakh ex-showroom & A4 comes with a fair share of goodies. Also our oh-so-brilliant tax structure & the falling rupee have had a role to play.
As far as a better tranny is concerned i dont think either the S-tronic or the ZF-8 is going to make its way into this generation of the A4. Its something only the next gen A4 will benefit from. Only consolation now is the A4 has some grunt to keep up with the 3/C.
