I was shocked to see Go+ amongst the few top gainers for the month of April. This surely means that India has a good amount people who need people movers at that price point (below the Ertiga) and looks like if this vehicle is brought into India it can get good success. (The maruti tag & wagon-r success story)
The thing that has to be kept in mind is how safe this vehicle is and how highway friendly it is.

Slightly offtopic, I read somewhere that maruti is coming up with a diesel wagon-r sometime soon.

The blue WagonR-7 seater posted by Gaadiwadi is just a re-coloured version of the green car from Indonesian autoshow (see the background). IMO, if such a car is coming, it shouldn't be based on Wagon-R (very narrow, and we have a similar Eeco here) or Solio (such an ugly one!), but on Celerio - a wider and more robust platform.

And it should not look like Celerio. Earlier, I was against the looks of A-Star. But nowadays, seeing A-Star and Celerio side-by-side, I can see how good looking and sporty an A-Star is!

Maruti Suzuki has imported two units of the 7-seater MPV, codenamed YJC, for research and development purposes.

The import data indicates that one of the cars is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine, while the other one has a 1.3-litre diesel unit. While both engines are expected to be mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, there are rumours that an automated manual transmission is likely to be offered as well.

With just 100mm longer than current one, the next gen WagonR will have the same length for both 5 and 7 seaters, IMO.

Those who need a 5 seater, with a large bootspace, which can even double up as a 5+2 seater, but may not have the $$$ to buy an Ertiga, now just have the option to "adjust" with the existing 5 seater hatchbacks, or buy a Go+ taking a risk (I tell this risk because, Datsun is an almost unknown brand).
The other options are to go for an Omni or Eeco, which will not be the top choice for those who purchase for their own family (and not for commercial reasons), because of its boring van type.
Datsun has been actually selling about 700+ vehicles per month, which is a sign. When Datsun can do it, why not Maruti?
Surely, a slightly longer WagonR with 7 seats if offered at a premium of 50K from the current WagonR, surely they have another winner. This means about 5.5L, the customers can have a 7 seater or a station wagon with huge boot, with MASS support.
In fact the potential can be huge, so their combined sales, if marketed properly might cross 20K units per month.

WagonR - 7 seater ( YCA? )in news again, will debut at the Auto expo 2016.

India launch likey in March 2016.

The sub-compact MPV (codenamed YJC or YCA) based on the WagonR platform was showcased as a pre-production prototype at the Indonesia International Motor Show

Quote:
The WagonR 7-seater MPV could be among the first vehicles to be rolled out from the company’s upcoming Gujarat based facility which has finally got the nod from shareholders. The WagonR 7 seater could be made initially at the Gurgaon plant and once the Gujarat plant is ready the car could manufactured there and also exported to ASEAN countries like Indonesia, Philippines and Vietnam.

This could be good option for large families who need 7-seaters and are on a strict budget and opt for Omni / Eeco now. A car-like feeling compared to the van-like feeling of Omni and Eeco, but at a higher price point.

IMO, Maruti should stop the 3-decade-old Omni and Eeco, and bring the more modern Every Wagon from Japan with 2 engine options - 800CC F-series at the 2.5L - 3.5L range named as Omni F8, and 1200CC G-series at the 3.5- 4.5L range named as Omni G12. Though another boxy car in all aspects, it would bring some freshness to the low-cost 7-seaters.

Then, this Wagon-R 7-seater with the 1L K-series or 1.2L G-series engine at the 4.5 - 5.5L range.

Ertiga will take care of the higher priced segment, at the 6L - 9L range.

Any update on this?

Zauba says the YJC-7 part imports are going on. Is it the Wagon-R 7-seater?

How about an extended A-Star to include 3 rows? Advantages would be:
1. Further reduction in price compared to Wagon-R seven seater
2. Wider car, more stable (and better looking) as a seven seater
3. Front shape is better suited for a seven seater, compared to Wagon-R. Would look similar to the Ertiga, rather than the boxy Wagon-R
4. Better build (and solid looking) than the Wagon-R
5. Nobody would complain about "lack of interior space" anymore

May be a good idea when compared to Wagon-R 7-seater.

Extended A-Star here, in the lines of Datsun Go+ and Toyota Calya..

The rear door can be set open to both 2nd and 3rd row passengers, considering the low height + sliding 2nd row seat arrangement will create issues.

I believe that instead of trying to adjust 2 more seats in a WagonR to compete with Datsun Go Plus and Renault's upcoming Compact MPV, Maruti Suzuki should rather launch Eeco on WagonR's platform that supports ABS and Airbags, and launch Eeco 7 seater with safety features, as well as Power Steering and Dual HVAC, ISOFIX Child Seat mounts etc. I find Eeco to be a practical car, and a 7 seater model with more creature comforts should definitely attract families with 5+ members on a tight budget.

Maybe bring in an Eeco Cross (high ground clearance, body cladding, roof rails, wider and larger set of alloy wheels, etc.) and Luxury (rear washer-wiper-defogger, Dual HVAC with ACC, Split Folding rear seats, Rear Parking Assist, Maruti's SmartPlay Infotainment System etc.) variants with such features and surprise everyone.

Let WagonR be alone, it looks good as it is. Why change it when it's still selling in such high numbers? As a proud former WagonR owner for 11 years, I can vouch for the car and it's practicality. Would like to see that in an Eeco as well.

You mean relaunch the Versa in Dx2 variant with the addition of ABS and airbags?
