If you recall the Cielo was a generatioon old (compared to Astra, Opel Kadetts became Opel Astra, Astra was the name of the Vauxhall counterpart of the Kadett) Opel Kadett with cosmetic touches to the front and rear. The Kadett was first manufactured by Daewoo as the Racer and later they brought out the Facelift. This Kadett was of the same generation as the 309. Esteem too wasn't a new product. It dated back to 1987 Swift. So Although the 309 was actually old the others were technically as old.
The Kadett a.k.a. the Cielo was a 1985 model which was facelifted later on. WHen I meant it was old I never meant the ability I know that the ride of the Peugeot and the handling composure especially at high speeds was still the best. But the problems were Sales & Service (you know what the state of PAL was in those times) and appearance. Let's face it the Peugeot looked old not only on the outside but also on the inside. The Interiors were frankly crap and the fit & finish was also not the best. Whereas the Cielo had better interiors & fit & finish.

Still I think the primary reasons for it getting killed was the lack of quality Sales & Service (remember that in those days 5.5-6 lakhs was a lot of money) and the exit of Peugeot rather than the appearance & quality of the product.

My relative who is working with a Hyundai dealership bought a Peugeot 309 very recently and he told me that getting spares is not a big problem since the spares of Accent CRDi can be fiited on it.

Is it true or is he just bluffing just to cover up his idiotic buying decision ?

Slight correction - the accent diesel first came with the Peugeout diesel - same as esteem etc which was a real slug - the CRDi came much later

Thats right, the engine was called the Peugeot TUD5 and it was also used in the Esteem D and the Zen D.

Its not the Accent CRDi but the previous Diesel accent that shares the same engine as the Pug GLD.

the Cielos and Astras are still seen time to time in Hyderabad, but the Ford Escort is very rare. the Escort wasnt that good a car either, but was going thru coz of the only luxury car at that time. The Astra and Cielo are nicer cars, but Cielo again dropped out totally due to the horrible mileage and very expensive spares. The Astra, even today is a nice car, thou looks very dated now. but the ride and comfort are good, so people do keep em going if they have been owning them from day 1.

the rest have been scrapped. broken down, and its spares have gone to the used spares market.

I also remember most of the radio taxi cabs in Delhi were Cielo Executives. Really cool.
Also the Opel Astra DTMs are raced in the DTM racing series (not this year though) and we had a car by the same name in India.

Actually all 3 of them (the Escort, Astra and Cielo) had a very pathetic mileage and spares were equally expensive.

yeah... the electronically adjustible side RVMs costed Rs.22000 for pair for astra ( luckily it was not our Astra .. touchwood ) in 1999.
later we got a letter from GM with revised pricelist for spares, where the same was priced at 12000.
