Had a quick conversation with someone who owns a VW dealership in Bangalore

• He was of the opinion that VW are "doing a Renault" and depending too much on the Taigun as a one model strategy.
  
• Asked opinion about the Virtus - did not sound that excited. It was - "eh - what's that, oh yes!"
  
• Skoda call the shots and get the better opportunities when it comes to offering a full model range.

Test marketing though could start earlier by importing vehicles , but mass market introduction to happen post 2025/26.

We see it happening only in the second half of this decade after 2025-26

Just saw a couple of interviews of Ashish Gupta - he has hinted at VW India getting some EV test vehicles by this year end or early next year. Skoda will be going for the CSUV as their next launch (Ref: interview with SVP - Car & Bike).

Possible that VWs next offering would be an EV under the next year's 2.5k importing rule.

Interesting space to look out for!

Volkswagen ID 4 EV India launch confirmed for 2023.

Volkswagen will start testing the ID.4 electric crossover in India with a couple of imported units from August-September this year.

Volkswagen to begin testing ID.4 in India by September
Will be launched in India in limited numbers in 2023
ID.4 gets range of up to 520km on WLTP cycle

Volkswagen will thus be using the ID4 as a testbed, not just for the product itself, but also to evaluate the electric ecosystem and its own internal and external operations to make a viable business case for EVs.

Only then can the brand eventually move to local assembly and then full localisation.

While it decides on its path ahead, Volkswagen will keep its portfolio fresh with a few CBU models.

The brand will be going ahead with its India 3.0 plan. The latter is all about electric mobility, which will cover both CBUs as well as locally built EVs.

Well, I think we should be getting used to this by now; given the fact that they were dragging the Polo for 10 long years with mere stickering jobs and stuff!! Agreed, that Polo was and is an icon in the hatch space for obvious reasons, but that ain’t a strong reason not to update the model significantly whereas the rest of the world were already a generation ahead.

VW ID.2all hatch and small electric SUV will arrive in India after 2026, but only after heavy localisation.

the car is scheduled to launch in Europe by the end of 2025 or early 2026, so there is still time before India gets a taste of what would essentially be the electric equivalent of the Polo.

VW Group kicks off PEAK EV project for India, mainstream e-SUV likely by 2026.

After years of studying the electric vehicle space, the 272.9 billion-euro Volkswagen Group has finally kicked off work on localising its electric vehicle in India with project ‘PEAK EV’ which is likely to spawn multiple vehicles starting 2026.

Volkswagen Group’s lead entity in India – Skoda Auto Volkswagen India – has started work on the Born EV platform on its own. The company had engaged in a discussion with homegrown auto major Mahindra & Mahindra to explore possibilities of jointly developing a small electric vehicle platform, but has decided to go on its own.

Skoda Auto plans to localise the MEB21G architecture in the country, which is likely to spawn out multiple SUVs for both the Volkswagen and Skoda brands in India with significant export potential over a lifecycle

The first SUV EV is likely to get the Volkswagen badge – with a potential of volumes of 50000 units – for both the domestic and export markets. This will be a major intervention under the German brand, which has decided to shift focus to all electric vehicles in the country. Skoda's mainstream EV alternative is planned to follow Volkswagen's product.

Interestingly, Skoda Auto Volkswagen’s upcoming small SUV positioned below the Skoda Kushaq and VW Taigun is likely to sport only the Skoda badge, and the German car maker will put its EV in the market in the early part of the race, rather than being a late mover
