re: Maruti to offer AMT (Automated Manual - "EZdrive") in its small cars

As per a report in Autocar, it looks like Tata is also thinking of the AMT route for Nano. Full AT wont be cost effective in Nano.

Quote:
Girish Wagh, senior vice president Programme Planning and Project Management (PVBU) Tata Motors, has confirmed the car maker is evaluating various technologies, including auto transmissions, to strengthen the Nano’s positioning as a city car. A CVT or a more cost-effective automated manual transmission (AMT) are likely options for such a ‘clutchless’ Nano of the future.

re: Maruti to offer AMT (Automated Manual - "EZdrive") in its small cars

The Zigwheels report (link: http://www.zigwheels.com/news-featur...z-drive/17648/) does not seem to be very accurate in its surmise of the potential AMT from Maruti. What it seems to suggest is that the Maruti AMT will continue to have a "stickshift", i.e. the gear lever but it will not have a clutch pedal (clutch action will be automated) - something like the TVS JIVE mobike.

But i have a feeling Maruti's AMT will be full auto'box - minus the complexity of a DSG/DCT or a CVT or a conventional torque converter auto'box.

Most probably the Maruti AMT will be a existing suzuki manual 'box with electric motors operating the Clutch , the selector and the shifter mechanisms. All this should be controlled by a separate ECU, working in tandem with the main vehicle ECU.

However the problem with these 'boxes, is that while they are low on investment and pretty cheap to manufacture, compared to conventional DCT's, DSG's, CVT's et al - AMT's do suffer from a degree of "head-nod". "Head-nod" is nothing but a jocular term coined to describe the "shift-lag" when an AMT is switching between gears - either upshift or downshift.

In fact, this is one of the main reasons why AMT's couldn't be popular in Mainland Europe, as the demanding "driver oriented" markets of Europe - whose primary demand was rapid fire gear-shifting quality with the smoothness of an auto. Hence these boxes had to acquit themselves to the more superior (albeit expensive Dual Clutch 'boxes).

Hopefully Maruti should have calibrated their 'box to take care / minimse these aspects.

re: Maruti to offer AMT (Automated Manual - "EZdrive") in its small cars

How would AMT provide torque regulation and control in dead slow driving conditions?
Is the TCU intelligent enough to simulate 'half-clutch'?

If not, the driver's experience of parallel parking into a tight spot, reversing up a ramp, being caught in a traffic jam etc could very well be the nemesis of the AMT.

Interiors of Celerio are out. I quite liked the interiors considering its a budget car. Interiors are similar to what they showcased in A wind concept.

Leg room is also very good. Overall car looks very good. Pricing will be key

Volkswagen offers something similar on their mass market car, the UP. They call it ASG (automated sequential gearing). However, the Autocar review of the ASG says it is really bad.

Pretty neat design. Maruti is taking bin sharing to a whole new level. The A/C vents are from Swift, Power window buttons, speedo from Ritz?

The rear bench looks like a 90 degree - Could be the only problem. The plastic do NOT look that cheap either.

Actually don't see a lot of apparent bin sharing. There was once a boy who told me that the A/C vents in my car were also that of a Swifts they are all merely inspired from the Kizashi's vents. Even the dimensions and materials are different. They are trying to have a recognizable cabin design that's all.

Yes that rear bench does look a little uncomfortable though

It says spirited driving (with engine and chassis to match) is what suffers. I think the control unit may be programmed more for FE since they always mention FE and emission reduction as the main advantages.

I think this gearbox would be loved by soft enthusiasts who would hate to use clutch more often. Shifting manually on this wipes off the disadvantages completely.

What is Celerio doing on this thread?

Nice to see the pictures of AMT and the confirmation that it is present in lower variants. Will there be a regular MT variant of Celerio or will it be AMT only across all variants? Not providing a normal MT could backfire since there might be at least some people who might not want a half hearted AT and hence get forced to choose a different car. If promoting AMT is the idea, they should probably have MT and AMT at the same price so that only those customers who really want an MT would go for it.

The dash looks well put together and pleasing when compared to A Star. Is that a passenger air bag provision or a cubby hole to hold diet coke?

Rear seats seem to be a little short on length to showcase an apparently larger legroom and might not provide enough thigh support. Looks like they had some space constraints and had to squeeze in a rear seat with just ~85% of the usual space actually available after they fixed the boot space and the rear leg room.

The lap belt in the middle shows that they are projecting it as a 5 seater.

In case you missed, Celerio is the first Maruti to come with AMT.

It is expected that Maruti Suzuki will offer the automatic transmission from the first variant onwards however there’ll be a manual transmission on offer, but only in the higher variants.

The Celerio MT will be with the 5 speed manual gearbox. As is the case with petrol-only Maruti Suzuki car models, expect LXi, VXi and ZXi trims on the Celerio.

A diesel engine for the Celerio is currently under consideration what with Suzuki Japan developing a range of turbo diesel engines with capacities between 800 cc and 1.4 liters. The Celerio is likely to get an 800 cc twin cylinder turbo diesel engine in 2015.

Cheers!

Seems like it is not just AMT, but a full-fledged AT is also available; + and - for AMT, while PRND for fully automatic system. That will push the cost beyond the reach of many buyers, I guess. If it was just AMT (+, - setup), the cost would have been on par with manual.

AMT will always have the additional fully automatic mode. Our initial impression that AMT is only manual is not right.

So are you saying that there will be variants like:

1. AMT + Fully automatic
2. AMT + Fully automatic + manual,

and not an "Only AMT" variant?
