Re: December 2013 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Going by the averages Indica+Vista+Indigo+Manza should be near 6K and dont think Nano+Twist will be more than 2500. There may be huge inventory pile of Nano's at the dealers and most of these 2500 may be twist.

With the Auto Expo mania, i think we wont get sales report for the month of January 2014. I was waiting for it. All are busy behind coming new cars, no body has time for old cars sold

I second that. I am sure we will eventually get a combined Jan-Feb sales thread next month.

And all the hype is building up towards the AutoExpo no one in the industry has an eye on anything else.

Re: December 2013 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Domestic cars sales are down by 7.59% in Jan-14 (160,289 units) over Jan-13 (173,449 units). More details here:

http://businesstoday.intoday.in/stor.../1/203220.html

However, it is the 2-wheeler sales that have picked up (by 4%) in Jan-14, which IMO is an indicator of bad economy.

Oh my god! Honda is firing all guns with the new City! a record 7000+ units. I don't think any other model, except the mighty City has crossed this number in the city segment. IIRC, previous highest was 6,2xx by City before the market turned diesel savvy. Much improved numbers from Fiat too!

Good start for FIAT this year.
Other than new launches most of the numbers are in RED.

Thanks vsrivatsa.

1. GM is down in the dumps. I wonder such VFM packages like spark and beat are not getting accepted by us (Me included)? These two cars have features and quality which are much better than the #1 and #2 in their segments. Plus '3 years of service' comes free. I did not buy one of these two - only because of ignorance. Wonder how many are like me? Not many I guess. Only other reason I see is the reach. But still GM - you deserve better, much better numbers.

2. i10 Grand will see more competition in the coming days - from Celerio on the low end.

3. Time for MSL to launch a replacement for Ritz. A sweet spot in terms of pricing, is grossly under harvested. Is it by design? I don't think. A lot of Wagon R customers can be easily migrated to Ritz. Is Celerio the answer - I guess not.

4. MSL has used a best seller at appropriate times in the appropriate segments to succed. M800, Alto, Wagon R, Swift, Dzire, (Ertiga?). They need to really pull up their socks to come out with a credible car in today's times. Better alternatives to Vernas and Citys - May be Ciaz...?

Re: December 2013 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

I am guessing that Honda had started the production of the ANHC way back towards November-end.

The Amaze figures were going down from October to December 2013. The old City was discontinued in October (Correct me if I am wrong).

Considering this the figures of 7K+ ANHC sold in January-2014 seems normal.

The real picture will get clear in the next 3-4 months time, when the sales settle down at a count somewhere near 4K-5K. Thats my guess.

I agree with your analysis regarding the City. I booked my City in Nov and received it in first week of Feb. Honda claimed at launch that they had 9000 odd pre-launch bookings for the City. This might also mean a tough fight between the Verna and the City once the sales settle down...
Also it seems like a smart strategy from Honda>>I assume they have a big backlog for the Petrol version of the City now since they have released only Diesel - so I guess the sales of the City will run into high numbers for the next 3-4 months at least...

Thanks for the data - was eagerly waiting for some info. No stats for EcoSport in the table, but about 3.9k units mentioned in the blog (also no figures for Thar, Pajero & Koleos)

Re: December 2013 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Honda seem to have sold 0 examples of the Accord in January. On checking the Honda website, it seems that the Accord has been discontinued in India, as it has been removed completely from their site.

This means the D2 sedan segment is now left with only 4 cars - the Hyundai Sonata, Nissan Teana, Škoda Superb and Toyota Camry. In January 2014, the Camry took the top slot in this segment (81), followed by the Superb (19) and the Sonata (9). Nissan seem to have sold 3 units of the Teana. With the discontinuation of the Honda Accord and the Volkswagen Passat, the size of this entire segment was only a paltry 112 cars in January.

Honda are now left with only 4 vehicles in their range, and yet they are new no. 4 in the market (15714 units in January 2014), having leapt ahead of both Toyota (10910 units) and Tata (10974 units). They are surely aiming to take a podium position in the future, since they are not too far behind Mahindra (19792 units). If one considers only cars, then they are already on the podium.

With the Mobilio, Jazz and maybe even a compact SUV lined up for launch in the future, and their new plant in Rajasthan becoming operational soon, they are surely aiming for glory in the Indian market - a fantastic comeback by Honda!
