Re: Jan 2014: Road Tax hiked in Kerala

Why can't we have uniform tax structures across India.

First there is a difference in VAT then there are entry tax/octroi/god knows what at different locations.

And then different road tax structures. Imagine the pain of a customer and resident of India who buys same vehicle at a value much higher than his friend might have bought in the same country at a different location.

Either to understand policies or this is pure discrimination.

These are budget declarations of the next financial year. So these will start getting implemented from 01 Apr 2014.

Re: Jan 2014: Road Tax hiked in Kerala

A gentle reminder. Only four more working days left before the tax rates changes.
If any immediate registrations are pending, making use of these days might help in reducing the OTR by some thousands.

Re: Jan 2014: Road Tax hiked in Kerala

Actual tax rate change takes upto 45 days after declared date.
When Maharashtra hiked OTT it was to be applicable from 1 Apr, but actual hike happened only in May after the Governor signed the bill.

"We might raise taxes in other areas,” said Mr. Babu, the excise minister. But he expects that as alcohol sales fall, the state will be spending less “on law and order and on medicines to treat alcohol abuse."

Kerala govt increases the LTT for vehicles costing more than 20L to 20%, thus being the highest in South India (in this slab).

Looks like they want to completely eradicate drunk driving. First, they introduce steps to close down the bars so that people would not get drunk. Next, they increase the road tax on cars to ensure people would not be able to drive.

The current "above 15 lakhs" rate is 17% (not 20%) - see link. You could ask the Mods to correct the original post to avoid confusion.

We have booked a Ciaz ZXi with ex-showroom cost of 8,90,364, so was expecting Tax to be 89,036 (10%), but dealers indicate 71,229.
Was surprised by the stealers quoting lesser, so googled around and the below posts in another thread clarified it - while earlier road-tax was on the higher ex-showroom price, now it is on the lesser pre-VAT figure. Just an FYI for others.

The MVD site does not seem to have such a slab(20%). The highest slab listed there for private cars is for those costing more than 15lakhs and the tax mentioned is 17%. See snippet from the link pasted below. Not sure how the 20% for your BMW was arrived at.

Re: Jan 2014: Road Tax hiked in Kerala

What are the current rates in Kerala? I am getting a quote of registration charges close to 8% for an ex-showroom price 6.6L for an LMV less than 1500cc.

The Motor Vehicles Dept site mentions the tax as "Motor cars having cubic capacity below 1500 = 6% of the purchase value of the vehicle" in their pdf document.

The site is probably not updated but the tax for the 5 to 10L slab is 10%. But as mentioned earlier this seems to be on pre-VAT and not Ex-showroom price, so if you calculate on the Ex-showroom price it will be exactly 8% (this is based on my experience and the value supremeBaleno has quoted earlier).
