Davos: After big success of its existing models like Scorpio and XUV 500, auto major Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M) is working on a new mass-market sports utility vehicle (SUV) and plans to position it as the lowest-price vehicle in this segment.

The company is currently working on 2-3 platforms for this new SUV, which it plans to launch beginning 2015 at a price even below that of Scorpio, senior executive Pawan Goenka told PTI in an interview here.

Nice read, though slightly repetitive.

Btw, don't they already have the Bolero as a "mass-market" SUV? Or is that an MUV? If they are planning on a sub-4mt vehicle maybe they can use the Bolero's engine to develop the new vehicle?

Bolero is a bare bones vehicle preffered more by the rural folks. What they can launch is a more urban oriented entry level SUV to take on the likes of Ecosport head on. I think there is a huge market there. After the XUV500 they know how to offer the right package at the right price point.

Offtopic,
Tata beware, another weapon from Mahindra's arsenal. Hope it doesnot doom the Jump.

Well Mahindra has the good will and the right brand to attack this urban SUV segment. If they price it right, looks good and handles well, they have a winner at hand.

Most of the people would prefer to go with Mahindra with the local brand that they has more service centres and has faith that service and spares would not cost a bomb.

SUV's have become more urbanised. So rather than going for strong muscle mass, if they can bring muscle with shape that will click.

Should be some well needed competition for Duster/Terrano/Ecosport. However, let's hope M&M don't botch it up like the Quanto. Anything along the lines of the XUV should be glam enough for the City folk.

Thinking out loud, if they price it around the Ecosport mark, wouldn't the mid-top variants be pushing the Scorpio. Segments aside, the mass majority would rather have the bigger car. And with a Scorpio reload impending, it would be interesting to see how Mahindra play this.
Or maybe am just counting the eggs way too early.

Mahindra and Mahindra plans its M/SUV portfolio.

Mahindra and Mahindra is working on developing two new platforms for top-end SUVs. The auto major is working on three new global platforms to spruce up its portfolio. The platforms are being developed at the company's North America Technical Center.
1. M&M is all set to roll out a new MPV (Multi-Utility Vehicle) to take on the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. Launch in 2017

2.M&M is also eyeing UVs in the range above the XUV 5OO, and is also looking to ramp up its SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) line-up and is planning to develop two new platforms for the same.

They should ideally work on a replacement for Scorpio or try to better it. This is the only SUV which sells from M&M. I would consider the XUV to be successful as well, but sustaining it the way Scorpio has done, that has to be seen.

In the Scorpio, I would like to see the engine tune of the XUV [for top end grunt while retaining the low end torque] and of course, better brakes with more improvement in ride, handling, interior packaging, quality of interiors and most importantly, its vendors.

New SsangYong Rexton to debut as a Mahindra at Auto Expo 2018, sitting at the top of M&M's passenger vehicle line-up, right above its existing flagship, the XUV500.

The manufacturer is aiming to undercut the Toyota Fortuner by Rs 4 lakh, which would see the Rexton range start at about Rs 24 lakh (ex-showroom). It is expected to launch later this year, closer to Diwali.

The Mahindra Rexton is expected to stay largely identical to the car sold globally but could feature cosmetic changes to bring it more in line with Mahindra's design language. Among the tweaks could be a new grille, different alloy wheel designs and some interior trim changes

Mahindra and Mahindra loses its UV market share more rapidly than expected. Vows to get back, but can it ever achieve a 30% market share with such fierce competition in this target segment ?

Note that when Maruti Suzuki was steadily conquering the UV market by tweaking its range and launching relatively cheaper compact UVs, such as the Vitara Brezza and Ignis, Mahindra was caught napping.
I mean I'm all for progress and everything but how in the world is a Brezza or an Ignis be a UV? Just because some misguided souls have the audacity to call them(and many others) SUVs doesn't mean they magically become one. If anything, the 'S' would stand for 'Soft' than Sports with questionable 'utility'. These are blown up hatchbacks, including that Creta. We should draw that line with the Bolero & similar.
