Audi @ Auto Expo 2014

Mod Note: Team-BHP's Audi A3 Review has been taken live at this link. Please continue the discussion over on the review thread.

Audi showcased the A3 sedan, which will be launched sometime soon to compete with upcoming Mercedes CLA Sedan and the existing Mercedes A class and BMW 1 Series hatchbacks. The A3 shares the same MQB platform as the new Skoda Octavia. The variant displayed at the Auto Expo 2014 was the 1.8 Litre TFSI Quattro version.

People of my height may not fit comfortably at the rear bench, the space at rear is even lesser than most of the small economy hatchbacks.

Bootspace is pretty good.

Re: Audi @ Auto Expo 2014

The Audi A3 Cabriolet was also displayed at the Audi stall at Auto Expo 2014. It's a 2 Door, 4 seater car. The Cabriolet version of A3 features motorized retractable roof which can also be used while the car is on move.

Re: Audi @ Auto Expo 2014

And this is the the recently launched in India- RS 7 Sportback, which also is the most powerful Audi car sold in India, even more powerful than the Audi R8 V10 plus.

Audi also had the Audi Sport Quattro Concept car on Display. This concept car makes 700bhp from a V8 engine.

Re: Audi @ Auto Expo 2014

I see a lot of potential in the A3 sedan. If priced right, it could appeal to a lot of buyers. I hope it turns out their winner model and they get everything right. Would it be priced in the range of 20-25L? And did I miss out the Q3? Was it there on display? That is one more Audi car that I really really like.

Q3 was mentioned in the press release, but on the day we went to cover the Audi stall Q3 was not there.

I also used to feel A3 has a lot of potential but after i spent some time sitting at the rear seat that feeling is not strong now. Maybe as my Laura replacement this car would have been perfect, but at times i need to seat 4 full sized adults, and they wont fit in this car.

I spent some time at the stall as well - have a friend who is a Sr Mktg chap at Audi.
Completely agree on the A3 space front. Very cramped, especially in the rear - even the A class is more spacious. My friend says launch not happening till end of Q2 for sure.

They also had the new A8 with Matrix lamps. Did you not get to see that?

There was no Q3 and no new A8 on display. Strange. Was it there on the day you went? We took these photos on Thursday not on the Wed media day.

Even the A6 was not there. Audi did not have any car assembled in India. As mentioned by Anshuman all cars were LHD imports.

The Audi stall was very good for the media folks as it was not accessible to the public, only VIP's and media were allowed to enter close to the cars.

The public on day 2 did not like this very much.

Hi Anshuman
I did have a look at the photograph of the gentleman seated in the back seat of the Audi A3 on the same page as your post on 8th Feb and ive been wondering if the front seats were first positioned at a reasonable driving position before that photograph was taken, given the fact that the front seats in the A3 have a pretty long travel.
I was wondering if you or any one could shed some light on the rear seat leg room in this car because i keep reading reviews from the US where at least one review mentions that although the vehicle is small in size and unless the back seat occupants are over six feet tall the rear seat leg room is acceptable, Also given the fact that the A3 wheelbase is 2640mm which is bigger than the 2006 GXi Honda city wheelbase of 2450mm and yet a wee bit smaller than the new Octavia wheelbase of 2688mm. At 5ft 10inches i am quite comfortable in the back seat of the Honda with the front seat in my driving position so given the fact that the A3 wheelbase is longer than the Honda mentioned above shoudnt there be more legroom here? unless the wheelbase figures mentioned above are all wrong or i am missing something.
Id be grateful for some inputs especially since iam trying to make up my mind between the new Octavia 1.8 and the new A3, the lines of which have me smitten to the point where i am seriously considering cancelling my Octavia booking.

Re: Audi @ Auto Expo 2014

Seeing that lack of space at the back, with respect to headroom and legroom, it's a certainty that the A3 is not really aimed at the chauffeur driven junta. Maybe Audi did drop the ball on this one though, because a lot of that market will be looking at the A3 simply because of the badge and its snob value.

It really is a bit tight at the back, no two ways about it.

They had the A8 in a cordoned off area on the upper deck behind a screen. Got to see it only after my friend took me there. Did not see the Q3

The car indeed looks very proportionate. Does the front seats have fixed headrests like the A-Class and the CLA?

Re: Audi @ Auto Expo 2014

The A3 is nice and it looks better in the display because its the sport trim which has a huge markup over the regular versions. Those wheels will not make it as options, expect the lame 7 spoke alloys or the s line trim with the current A4 like alloys along with a charge. The 2 litre diesel with 140 bhp will be the seller, the petrol 1.4 would have been nice for people who want a posh badge.

Did you get a chance to sit in the rear seat of the CLA?
I was wondering which of the 2 would have a better back seat? Some journo mentioned A3 had a marginally better back seat than the CLA which suffered from poor headroom!
