re: VW Vento Diesel Automatic... Update: Launched!

I think the scoop about 1.5 TDI based Polo was given by Horamzd in his Autocar show almost a year back. Not sure about 1.4 TDI.

Now the VW's management board seem to be moving towards a budget car for emerging markets and hence the 1.5TDI gains momentum.

Thanks,
There's no flip flop from VW actually. You cannot keep changing decisions like this from one week to the other. It's not like they said last week lets bring 1.4L 3 pot and then this week let's bring 1.5L 4 pot.

It's the media which is creating news to keep the buzz and not VW dilly dallying.

The Polo/Vento with the new engine is probably being tested in India as we speak.

The 1.5L TDI news (?) is nothing new. VW was toying with replacing the 1.6TDI with the new engine as long as maybe 2 years ago but I guess they didn't want to mess up a perfectly good thing. Had got this from a VW insider long back.
No idea what this 3 pot 1.4 is. Seems a strange choice since the Polo already sports a 3 pot 1.2 that's nothing to write home about. I totally agree that members need to validate the news they hear before posting or at least mention a published source. Otherwise we end up with threads and threads of speculation.

VW Vento Test Mule

On sunday while crossing the street, I happened to peep inside an inconspicuous silver Vento with MH 14 TC plates. I did not see whether it was a manual or automatic but the car had body bags/ test dummies on the front passenger seat and two on the rear seat nicely belted up. It was being driven on the regular route these VW/ Audi cars take for their testing. I assume that this is the 1.5L TDi engine being tested.

From the outside the car looked no different than the current Vento and was and the diesel clatter was also as loud if not louder than the current Vento. It sported the TDi badging on the top right corner of the boot.

By the time I realised that it was a test mule, the car had already passed me. Will try and snap it next time I spot it.

re: VW Vento Diesel Automatic... Update: Launched!

Some confirmation on engine and gearbox.

Looks like VW imported a Vento with the new 1499cc diesel engine with a DSG box from Germany for testing purposes.

Also, the 1499cc diesel engine has same power output as the 1.6L.

Details available at the below link that has import/export details to/from indian ports:

There's even a Polo with the 1.5 diesel mill brought in from Czech Republic for testing purpose.

re: VW Vento Diesel Automatic... Update: Launched!

I saw this video on Youtube while searching for Polo+DSG last year. It seems to have a 7 speed DSG like mentioned in the video. So will we also be getting the same DQ200 7speed box like in Vento & Polo TSI or is it going to be the 6 speed DQ250 like in Jetta & Laura. I somehow feel they'll give us the 7speed one.

here's the link to the video I saw:

I think they have the 1.6 TDI 90 PS & 215 Nm torque engine(as mentioned in the video) which is acceptable for the 7 speed DSG. The 1.6 here is 105 ps & 250 Nm torque which will strain the 7 speed for sure. So they might bring in the 7 speed only if they launch the 1.5 diesel mill which might have lesser torque compared to the 1.6 mill. Otherwise we can expect only the wet 6 speed DSG.

I beg to disagree. DQ200 7 Speed DSG can handle a max torque of 250NM. Skoda Octavia 1.8TSI has this transmission where torque is electronically limited to 250NM.

I guess they will pair 1.5L with DQ250. Let's see how it goes.

If VW wants to keep cost low, they will definitely plonk DQ200 7 speed DSG. Also internationally Polo 1.6 TDi is available with 7 speed DSG with 90 PS & 230 NM tuned.

Somehow DQ200 is given, it would definitely restrain engine. You would have no scope for remapping. Whereas with DQ250 you can play with almost 400 NM of torque.

That's because the way diesel generate torque is almost brutal compared to petrol. In 1.6 TDi manual it generates 280 NM of torque(Dyno) which manual transmission can handle. Whereas if they give DQ200 with 250 NM limit, 1.6 TDi would cause more troubles, that's why its limited to 230 NM.

Anyday DQ250 would be a better choice.

Yes that's the specs mentioned in the video I posted. 23.5kgm of torque. I feel they'll simply detune the engine (upcoming 1.5) and make do with DQ200. The TSI costs 12.5 lakhs here in bangalore. Diesel+DSG will mean atleast a lakh more,if they push prices any further they might be dangerously into D1 segment. DQ250 being wet type might be a little too expensive IF VW wants to price it competitively.

Let's wait and watch.

I really hope they launch a powerful DSG equipped polo diesel. I'd be quite interested in having one in the garage if it can be had under 10-10.5 lakh on road.

Does anyone know what the current manual top of line diesel polo cost? That could give an indication of the AT pricing.

The highline costs 8.xx here and GT TDI is close to 10 lakhs in bangalore.

Do you think a 1.6TDI with some 105 horses and 250NM can be more brutal when compared to 178 horses and 250NM of Skoda Octavia 1.8TSI? No mate. When that transmission can handle new Octavia 1.8TSI then it can easily handle a 1.5TDI with 105 or 110BHP and 250NM.

Also current 1.6TDI Manual in India generates a max torque of 250NM at 1500RPM.

Yes, that's why Polo 1.6 TDi is available with 90 PS & 230 NM tuned with DQ200 and not 250 NM.

A remapped 1.6 TDi generates 323 NM torque at wheels on dyno, so at crank it would be even higher. That's gives an idea how much torque handling capacity current manual transmission has. DQ200 with 1.6 TDi belting out 250 NM would make it a toast.

To do true justice to 1.6/1.5 TDi VW should put in DQ250 gearbox. Lets wait & watch as shashank.nk says.
