Doing 50% of the total business is just outstanding. Isn't it the great news guy's? Maruti alone is fighting against all great players here in India. Great going for them. Now please don't start to say that they have early mover advantage. Others are also here now for more than 10-15 + years. So no more that advantage. With launches of Ciaz and SX4 Cross i am sure they will increase share more. Great going Maruti, Keep it up

The Indian market is too concentrated: it is almost duopolistic, as a whole as well as in individual segments. This is a sure sign of severe market failure, which has many causes but the biggest ones are: ignorance, severe herding effects, economies of scale for the early movers which has enabled maruti and Hyundai to out market and distribute and service the later entrants.

Everyone loves to speak of state and political failure, some good souls even speak of civic failure but the indian markets for cars and associated goods/bads is equally an example of our society's increasing problems with market failure. Notice, for example, the market for information and stories about cars and bikes. Compare Team-Bhp to the more or less corrupt and truth-less commercial auto mags and tv shows.

Team-Bhp is an increasingly influential way of negating some of these market failures!

Maruti has a lower sales compared to same month last month. Sales dip by 5.5% overall 5.2% dip in Domestic.

Pretty weird considering just in the february-End Government has reduced the ED by 4%.... and everyone expected to see a much improved performance in next 3 months.

Will have to see whether its overall market mayhem or just a blip for maruti.

Re: February 2014 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Ford India today reported 57 per cent increase in total sales at 11,805 units in March 2014.

The company had sold a total of 7,499 units in the same month previous year, Ford India said in a statement. Domestic sales were up 20.58 per cent to 6,356 units in March as against 5,271 units in the same month previous year, it added.

The company exported 5,449 units last month as against 2,228 units in the year-ago period.

Ford India Executive Director (Marketing, Sales and Service) Vinay Piparsania said: “Cautious is how we should define the first quarter of 2014. The excise duty reduction has definitely been a positive step.

“As India gets set to vote, we look forward to such industry-friendly initiatives being sustained to support the important automotive sector.”

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has released its official sales figure for March 2014. The company sold 9,160 units in March 2014 in comparison to 21,143 units sold in March 2013 which also includes exports. The Japanese car maker sold 8,206 units in March 2014 as compared to 19,452 units in March 2013 showing a heavy drop of 57.81 per cent.

Mr. N Raja, Senior Vice-President, Sales and Marketing said, “We started limited operations from March 18, 2014, with the help of our non – unionized team members, majority of whom are supervisors.”

The sales are down heavily, Toyota also showed decline in sales figures for February albeit with a smaller number. This massive decline, as the company has claimed, is also due to the issues at the company’s plant stemming from the standoff between the workers and the management. Stand off is still ongoing. The tiff began in the earnest from March 16 and has been continuing ever since.

Re: February 2014 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Unprecedented City sales take Honda cars to best year in India ever.

Annual sales up 83 percent; 9,518 units of new City sold in March 2014.

I believe City has set a new benchmark for most C+ segment car sold in a month. 9K+ City in a month is a huge number. Looking forward to VAG Group numbers.

I wonder if the New City has been able to pull back people from the SUV craze that has swept across segments. Will be interesting to see the detailed numbers which will come out soon to see who has lost out to the City

I doubt whether the SUV appetite will diminish. However, 18000 plus units sold cumulatively in March represent serious numbers - Honda is turning the corner in India methinks.

It looks like City grabbed a bit of the Amaze Share as well. Based on the previous month's numbers it appeared that it has taken a slice from each of the cars in its own segment such as Sunny, Rapid/Vento and Verna. With Honda hiking the price again, there maybe a bit more (small percentage) tilt towards the others in the coming months.

Re: February 2014 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Honda is cashing in on the demand in a way it should be done. Ford should take leaf out of Honda's books as to how to benefit from the initial euphoria associated with any blockbuster launch. Having said that, I think City's sales will drop once the euphoria is over and will settle into a more sane number a few months down the line. Wasn't this the case with XUV500, Ertiga, Verna etc?
