Add to the fact that China has strong incentives for electric cars.

TESLA delays its India plans. Attributed the delay to navigating the local regulations regarding importations versus domestic manufacturing

Quote:
but they actually assumed that Tesla would open a factory in India in order to sell cars in the country, but like almost all markets outside the US, Tesla first planned to import vehicles.

Quote:
Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that Tesla had plans to enter the country last year, but those plans have been delayed.
Quote:
It followed some confusion over Tesla’s ability to even import its vehicles in India that came to light earlier this year.

What Elon Musk wants
: It sounds like the company would like a deal to be able to import its electric vehicles without penalties until they can produce them in the country with a new factory.

I read that some rationalisation has taken place. I wait for the details before commenting. I still say, a lot of this was all sorts of vehicles being called hybrids after the odd-even rule. The new e'way contributes far more to pollution control.

Why would Elon Musk expect such a deal when USA themselves are pushing "Made in America"? They are already planing to impose tariffs on all kinds of goods. So if Elon Musk wants to sell something, he has to make it here. There should be no consessions if he is trying to import. Period.

Elon Musk may visit India in early 2019!

Fresh from a three-day trip to China, Musk was asked about a potential India visit by a Twitter user on July 12. To which he replied : "Prob early next year"

A fan of Indian food, Elon Musk has visited the country at least once before. That was in 2007 when he attended the International Astronautical Congress held in Hyderabad.
