The link you've quoted also has Mr Pratik Kadle's revelations way back in 2015.

I had thought that though the facts are from yesteryears, the eye witness account by a Tata employee in the delegation could be a Times of India news scoop.

Thanks for the update.

I was not sure where to post this, did not feel like posting it in our "nextgen" EV section :-)

I will just quote him, "Time is a peculiar thing, It does incredible things to car".

Re: Fun & Interesting Trivia on the Indian Car Scene

I have 2 90s cars in my garage and was going through their papers. I found out that the Tata Estate weighed 10 Kg more than the double of the Esteem’s weight!

Tata Estate = 1640 Kg
Maruti Esteem = 815 Kg

A similar trend can be noticed between the Mahindra Armada and the Maruti Zen.

Armada = 1450 Kg
Zen = 730 Kg

Here, it is also interesting to note that despite weighting half as much as the Armada, the Zen was 40k more expensive!

If I had an Esteem/Zen/800 in the 90s, I wouldn’t want to be in a head on collision with a Sumo/Sierra/Estate/Armada! The lack of safety features and the serious momentum disadvantage would probably reduce the dinky cars to pulp. Thankfully, modern cars with well designed crumple zones and safety features have reduced the serious safety disadvantage that smaller cars had. A modern Altroz in a head on collision with a behemoth like a Safari would probably manage to protect the occupants just fine.

Re: Fun & Interesting Trivia on the Indian Car Scene

So here's some interesting trivia for non-Bombay folk. This road in Mahim is the ONLY one I've seen anywhere in India, which is open one way in the North -> South direction (first half of the day), and South -> North one way in the second half. Basically, one-way in the direction of rush hour traffic.

This is old Cadell road, that ends at Mahim Church. Sharing pictures going to the suburban side. In the morning, it's the other way around.

Very interesting.
On a similar note, A stretch near Garuda mall in Bangalore is probably the only one having right-side driving. Needless to say, this does invite lots of confusion to first-timers.

Re: Fun & Interesting Trivia on the Indian Car Scene

Couple of roads in Kolkata CBD also has the time-dependent-one-way-traffic. Park Street used to have traffic East-West till 2pm, and after 2pm, it becomes West-East. Same thing was there for portion of roads near Exide junction.

My parents’ native town in Murshidabad, WB also has a road with a very similar system. They divide the day into four 6-hour slots and keep two way traffic open only for the night hours. Unfortunately, in a town of that size, I still haven’t understood the purpose of doing do.

The downside of being a car enthusiast. In an otherwise outstanding & superbly-made show (Scam 1992), you notice that there was no wide-track Gypsy in 1992. The MG410W with its flared wheel arcs was introduced in 1993 (or 1994).

Add to that, the usual filmy mistake of Contessas with plastic bumpers and quadlights.

Yes, they showed the 2nd gen facelift LS400 in the Scam 1992 series instead of the 1st gen LS400, but it is pardonable because of the low budget and the fact that the layman won't be able to differentiate the two generations.

But.

The Big Bull (2021). I am assuming it is also set period correct as I haven't seen it. For all the big budget, they showed an LS430 with white on black plates.

Ditto for "The Attacks of 26/11", an exceptional movie. However, there was no XUV500 in 2008

Re: Fun & Interesting Trivia on the Indian Car Scene

Exceptional observations both of you

Look how far we have come from the earlier days.
When the actor rides in a red CBZ and rides out on a red Splendor (Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai) probably because the elder actor wouldn't have been comfortable riding pillion on the CBZ.

The number of times I have seen motorcycles switch from discs to drums and back can wind your automatic watches for a lifetime.

Anytime a car had to roll over or explode that had to be the Cielo(since they were mostly available as scrap after Daewoo ceased operations) instead of the Lancers/Mercedes involved in the chase prior to exploding.
But who would care, definitely not the filmmakers and a blown up Cielo costs far less than the Mercedes

Seeing your post now. That stretch is a keep right and has traffic both ways. But much before this was done, we have been having one stretch from Majestic bus stand towards Krishna flour mills like that - traffic is keep right, both directions.

Out of curiosity, does this get updated automatically in google maps?

Re: Fun & Interesting Trivia on the Indian Car Scene

The Japanese were not much educated and briefed by their marketing men about the Indian motor vehicle markets in their earlier years in the 1980's.

Maruti launched its 800 officially on 14th December 1983, but the real production commenced a year later. Within two years they decided to replace the SS 80 with the SB 308. Model changes, so rapidly involving replacement with a totally new body shell and trims, mechanicals and quite many electricals was unheard of in our market. The market absorbed the shock, but Maruti which was observing, getting educated and briefed by now kept the SB 308 body shell the same till 2014 though several changes were done to the trims, mechanicals and electricals.

A five year model life is quite healthy for our market as of now, as Honda has proved it since their first generation City was launched here.

Maruti honchos had perhaps by then seen the age old Ambassador and Premier Padmini body shells surviving here since 1958 and 1964 respectively. The Ambassador improved its Marks with new trims, while the Premier got very few replaced trims, but nevertheless got new names and badges.

We had big Japanese names entering into the light commercial vehicle (LCV) sector that included Mazda (its first and last entry in our market) with Swaraj Tractors, Mitsubishi with Eicher, Allwyn with Nissan and Toyota with DCM. DCM stood for Delhi Cloth Mills and its here that many new generation guys would be caught unawares as to how a cloth maker emerges as a vehicle manufacturer. The economy was opening up since the early 1980's when companies thought of diversifying. These ew generation LCV's offered innovative technology, driver cabin comfort and lots of goodies. But as these were selling or not selling, Tata came onto the scene with its Tata 407, that was not as contemporary, but was practical and was sensibly priced. Tata knew this price sensitive segment too well, where hitech, driver and cabin comfort play only secondary or negligible roles. The 407 captured a sizeable pie of the LCV market and soon became the market leader. Toyota and Mazda found the going tough and Nissan and Allwyn too surrendered. Allwyn was a state PSU of the AP government that was into refrigerator manufacturing. It started making scooters since 1978 in collaboration with Scooters India Ltd and by 1982 also with Piaggio. M&M bought the rights to manufacture the Allwyn Cabstar, renaming the LCV as Mahindra Cabstar. Toyota and Mazda had to close shop and retreat. Eicher sailed with Mitsubishi in the 407 tsunami and soon it became only Eicher. Its model was named Canter since launch. Eicher survives and so does the Tata 407. Swaraj with its tractors' survives.

The DCM group made its first foray into the car segment in the mid 1990's with Daewoo, launching the DCM Daewoo Cielo and soon the Matiz. The venture bombed when the South Korean chaebol collapsed after the turn of the millennium. The DCM group then had a dynamic octogenarian Mr Bharat Ram as its Chairman, who tried to venture into automobiles, but both the efforts with Toyota and Daewoo were victims of circumstances.
